No one rules alone and all rulers depend on a coalition of supporters to keep themselves in power. To keep their coalition's loyalty, they must pay them, and they must pay them first. Only then can the dictator take his share. If there is any surplus, the dictator can build a school or a hospital if he or she feels like it.This rule of course applies to all dictatorships, say authors Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith, but it also applies just as surely to liberal democracies. It is the size of a ruler’s coalition of supporters that makes a state one or the other. In a dictatorship, the ruler controls the money and pays off a few cronies, a few generals for instance, who can coerce and control the citizens. The cronies must pay their team, so the ruler must pay his cronies well so they can in turn pay their soldiers. As long as the ruler has the money for all this, nothing will topple him. The money can come from international aid, from income taxes on the citizens or from selling natural resources. In a liberal democracy, the ruler has much less control over the money. For one thing, most of a country's budget is fixed, civil service pensions, social security, military commitments, etc. For another, the ruler must follow the law when spending what is not already earmarked. He can't just write blank checks to whom he please. But once those differences are taken into account, power inevitably follows the same principles: all government is about paying off the ruler's coalition.Effective rulers keep their coalitions small. A city in California did this by relying on voter apathy. Hardly any one voted in municipal elections so that a few hundred voters in effect controlled the budget and paid themselves lavish salaries. To pay the coalition in poor countries, the dictator insists on handling any cash given as aid; he’ll redistribute it and if the needy are very lucky they’ll get a tiny bit of it. In rich dictatorships, the dictator sells oil or metals or any other valuable commodity and keeps the money for his cronies and himself while providing minimal health and education services to the poor, if they really have to. In aThe same rules apply in rich countries: the ruler pays off the electors with universities, infrastructure and healthcare. And he will still get kicked out in a few years because inevitably the large coalition will feel it isn’t getting enough. This is not a libertarian manifesto! The authors are quite clear: the answer is MORE government, not less, or at least much more of the good kind of government.First, we should aim for a larger coalition of cronies, a coalition that in effect includes every citizen. That way, the only way for the ruler to pay off the cronies is to deliver public goods that pay off everyone.Second, we should improve governance. That way policy decisions are made more transparently and the money can’t be easily diverted to a small clique of hidden enforcers. My only complaint with the Dictator’s Handbook is its relentlessly cynical tone; but maybe the authors are simply being honest.Vincent Poirier, Montreal

You ever get that feeling of realization that a fresh perspective gives you not only in how to do something but how you look at the rest of the world, past present and future? This books look at politics in general not only explains the behavior of politicians, but the behavior of human society in its natural state. By this I mean forget the alpha dog reeking of testosterone and short on brains persona, in fact other than on TV has that sort of leader ever held power for any length of time, if at all? No, instead look at the leader that puts their survival first and knows how to do it and you'll find humanities true leaders. I'm talking about the guy who talks up crowd, gets them wanting blood, then sets them loose while they stay behind the walls with their friends and the money. Or the person who controls a desired resource or commodity only they can provide that makes the supposed head of state kiss their ass. Or the woman who sets up a hidden camera in her bedroom to use as blackmail on her lover to get something overlooked. In short, this book phrases human society and the need for survival as politics to explain a politicians behavior but it really applies to everything that has a hierarchy, which really everything does. I genuinely recommend this book to be read not only buy those wishing to understand why politicians act the way they do , but who need help in understanding why their not getting what they want from their job, their relationships and their life as well as where they place in human societies hire Cathy and how to improve it.

Normally, I wouldn't pick up a nonfiction about politics besides the classics like Machiavelli, but after CGP Grey's well-explained video, my interest in this book perked up. [Dictator's Handbook] is a must for anyone interested in mechanics of politics, or just want a bigger picture of global politics explained. The book is not a literal handbook to be the next malicious dictator (great title though), but rather a keen analysis of western politics on a truly global scale. I have to say, this book isn't for the super squeamish because some of the examples used to illustrate a point can get gruesome. Actual dictators are known for enacting human suffering after all. Also, it was hard for me to finish this book, not because it talks about taxes (it does - not in a boring way), but because my mood turned quite cynical as I read the contents. When I did finish, my initial beliefs about utopian society did change and my views about democracy, dictatorship, and global politics as well.I am really glad I read Dictator's Handbook. It taught me something. It is exceptionally well written and argues with great illustrative examples.

This certainly isn't the greatest work of political theory but it is far from being without merit. The authors make a valid case for the functioning of politics in democratic and autocratic modern states with a survey of many modern revolutions, wars, and events. While they paint a stark, and cynical, picture of politics I can't help but feel that they are woefully ignorant of the vast majority of history (and I would argue, political philosophy). My point about their research of the modern period is just that; their analysis is largely limited to modern politics rather than the whole slew of history. Therefore we get such terrible over-generalizations such as democracies (including the modern USA and other Western liberal states and the Venetian Merchant Republic confusing grouped together) and autocracies (wherein Catholic Medieval Monarchies and Islamic Military Juntas are given the same consideration and breath). Unfortunately history, and the world of politics writ large, are not so easily categorized. Perhaps their analysis correct for modern states, but it fails to do justice to the myriad of states which have existed throughout history.

I'm a fairly experienced wood worker and wanted to get into some "Rustic Furniture" building, I've seen many pieces locally and thought I'd give it a try. What I was expecting was furniture built with tenon joints that would look nice in any home. What the book is, are a bunch of plans to build very very very rustic looking furniture. What I mean by rustic is raw unpeeled log/sticks unlike anything I've ever seen. This is not the rustic type furniture you would see in a lodge or expect to see in a log cabin, if that's what you're expecting, which I was this book is not for you.

living in the woods, I have often thought of making my own furniture. Unlike other books, this one explains how to do so easily without a ton of tools. Can't wait for the snow to go away so I can start making some!

This is a very clearly presented book, I recommend for anyone who wants to make rustic furniture. There isn't much rustic furniture available, so if you want it for your cabin in the woods, you have to make it. Doug tells you how.

Great video, loaded with very helpful information done in a very informal manner. Lots of projects and tons of details. Definitely worth every penny.

It's ok

Some great ideas for building rustic furniture.

This provides thorough directions for making rustic furniture. For anyone interested in making furniture, this is a must-have book! The price is right and you'll clearly learn the basics.

At last a voice of reason! Every once in a while a fresh view on something old finally comes along. I read this book with relish. Mr. Dunn is no dummy and he knows his stuff. I have ready many books on the pyramids and some of them I throw across the room in disgust--not this one!It is amazing how the "Main Streamists" insist that the pyramids of Giza were tombs when no body has ever been found inside them. They are not decorated inside like a tomb--not built like a tomb. Mr. Dunn is right as far as I am concerned. His arguments make so much sense and he backs them up with his knowledge of engineering.Mr. Dunn has undoubtedly taken a lot of flack and criticism for his views as has Robert Schock. These two men have risked their reputations, tenure, etc. to speak out. A new voice is always listened to with suspicion. Hats off to the men and women of the fresh voice who take us forward to new theories and new knowledge. Thank you, Mr. Dunn, for your forthright opinions and years of research trying to bring us kicking and screaming into a new realm of possibility. This is a wonderful book and an amazing book. I am awed by it!

First; a brief comment about another reviewer. I was looking over some of the old reviews before publishing mine, and out of curiosity I read a 'One-Star' review that was particularly harsh (not to mention lengthy) on Mr. Dunn's work. What I find most disturbing is the fact that it was written by the co-author (Marge Morris) of 'The Pyramids an Enigma Solved." This is a book that I have read and found to be intellectually stimulating, well written and relevant. What I find most distasteful is the fact that this fellow researcher and author, would use this forum to dismiss Mr. Dunn's hard work and research, and then go to great length to promote hers. I would like to believe (since we are all striving to better understand the mysteries of the ancient world), that there is room for more than one theory. Particularly when we are dealing with something as enigmatic and controversial as this subject appears to be. I am sure that Mr. Dunn has had to develop a thick skin over the ensuing years, due to the provocative and novel, leading edge ideas he has posited.Even though her particular review was written many years ago. it is still no less than small-minded, self-promoting, and above all unnecessary.Okay (now that I have that off my chest); this book was published in 1998 and I didn't get around to reading it until 2012, which means I'm a bit behind the 'Power' curve (pun not withstanding), yet as they say "better late than never." I'm so glad this book finally came to my attention and that I took the time to read it. That may have been due to seeing Mr. Dunn on the History channel being interviewed for the show "Ancient Aliens" (a popular show with an unfortunate name that implies everything has something to do with aliens, which I question but do not dismiss completely; I just think there are perhaps other alternatives?). I have also heard Mr. Dunn's interviews on the Coast to Coast late night talk show as well as 'youtube' videos of his presentations and have always found him to be intelligent, forthright and sensible. I would be remiss if I did not add that other theories aside, his appears to bring us much closer to some ultimate understanding of what this mighty edifice of precision engineered stone is all about.I have had the good fortune to have actually taken the tour inside the Great Pyramid of Giza, as a serving member of the USAF back in the mid-nineties. It left indelible impressions on me, and my regret is that as a young man I did not have the understanding or appreciation of Egyptian culture and her monuments, that I now have some twenty years later, after much reading and research on the subject. Back then my understanding of Egypt and her history was based on what I had seen in movies or on TV. Having made that clear, I very well remember walking (more like a stooped crouch as I recall) awkwardly up the ascending corridor and wondering why was it necessary to have a makeshift wooden ramp with cross-members to help tourists and the general public safely ascend to the Grand Gallery; could not the architects have incorporated stairs? Although I did not dwell on such a trivial (to some) issue at the time (due to the overwhelming sensory input akin to a child exploring a mysterious place for the first time), however I was subliminally aware that something was amiss; something did not add up?I was further baffled by the strange configuration of the Grand Gallery, with its odd architecture of corbelled sides rising up and towards each other for some inherent, and yet occluded purpose? Still believing what I had always been told; that this great mountain of stone was built with the sole purpose as a pharaoh's tomb. Upon gaining access to the so-called "Kings Chamber" with its much abused "sarcophagus" (?), I was startled to find that the walls (of which are perfectly flat and squared at the corners) were oddly devoid of any markings? Save for the questionable markings of red ochre paint attributed to the builders (this was unknown to me at the time) who in the manner of 'graffiti' painted the name of their pharaoh who supposedly commissioned this monument for his burial place. These suspect markings were"allegedly" found by one Col. Vyse in 1837, in the (so called) "relieving chambers" directly above the Kings Chamber; which had to be blasted open with gunpowder, no less! There was (is) absolutely no sign of hieroglyphics to be found anywhere else within this immense structure! This from a culture known to cover its monuments and funerary walls with numerous hieroglyphs in honor of deeds accomplished, feats to be remembered, as well as praise for their 'god-like' pharaohs, and with great detail. And yet nothing of the sort is found here; nothing save perfection in stone; stone which feels and looks much older than the attributed 4th dynasty origins (circa 2500 B.C.).Perhaps the author himself said it best when he wrote; "I was astonished and could find no logical resemblance to any feature one would find in a building constructed for human activity."It does make one wonder, if the Great Pyramid was not built for human activity (alive or deceased), than just what the heck was this monumental undertaking designed to do? This is exactly What Chris Dunn, a master craftsman and engineer dares to answer in his ground-breaking and paradigm shifting treatise, which posits no less than the unthinkable; that this mountain of precision engineered stone just might have been designed to "machine tolerances" beyond anything reasonable in the architecture of "HUMAN" habitats or structures, to function as a MACHINE! Or more specifically a "Power Plant," (the functioning details are found in his book).Let's review what has come to light in the last several decades:1. The thee main pyramids of Giza, are aligned to the three bright stars of Orion' belt; thanks to Robert Bauval and his "Orion Correlation Theory."2. The Great Pyramid has been called "The Bible in Stone" by some, due to its antiquity (pre or post deluge?) and the esoteric knowledge built into it by its creators.3. The three main pyramids as well as the Great Sphinx were intended as a set of monuments coeval with an unknown yet interconnected purpose.4. The Sphinx at Giza is far older than previously thought, as evidenced by the "water erosion" apparent on its (un-refurbished) sides as shown by Dr. Robert Schoch; (which would suggest coeval antiquity of the Giza complex as a whole).5. The exterior dimensions of the Great Pyramid show that the builders had knowledge of the circumference of the Earth, our distance from the Sun, as well as the precession of the equinox(s), with its 26,000 year duration , which the ancients called the "Great Year."6. The interior design of the Great Pyramid is unusual, enigmatic and serves no (known) human function imaginable, based on our understanding of architectural science for the human species.7. The (so-called) architectual "Relieving Chambers" layered above the (so-called) "Kings Chamber" (named from the Arabic perspective); are in fact "Relieving" what exactly? The massive weight from above? And yet considering that this chamber is several courses above the (so-called) "Queens Chamber - situated well below it, for which the architects saw no need for "relieving chambers," even though there must be millions of additional tons of stone above it? Clearly these spaced and layered chambers above the 'KC' had another function; (of which Mr. Dunn has an interesting idea that has to do with resonance as I recall).8. No mummified remains of anyone were ever found in the Great Pyramid. And as for the others it is my understanding that any found were from much later periods and in the best tradition of "re-purposing" an already existing monument!9. Contrary to what mainstream Egyptologists would have us believe, Khufu (Gr. Cheops) did not have this pyramid built, but rather inherited it intact, as a legacy structure form a former age, just as the stele found between the paws of the Sphinx has implied.10. The so-named "Gang of Khufu" did not write his name with red ochre paint in the crawlspace of one of the relieving chambers; this was a fraud perpetrated by a glory-hound and fund seeking explorer "wannabe" of Egyptian antiquities; who has been characterized as the "Black sheep" of his family. We find Colonel Vyse, along with his cohort(s) in crime, who accomplished this heinous act of fraud after blasting his way into a sealed cavity, in 1837. This outrageous act of fraud has 'mucked-up' our understanding of these monuments to this very day, IMHO. (See the late authors Z. Sitchin's "Stairway to Heaven," Chapter entitled "Forging the Pharaoh's Name." Also The late Phillip Coppens, "Murder and forgery inside the Great Pyramid?" As found online; both provide in-depth perspective on this travesty). The ten items offered above, are but the tip of a vast iceberg of information concerning this subject; the list of incongruous anomalies and found revelations, could go on for several pages. And now we must add the very real possibility that a primary function of this last existing 'wonder of the ancient world', may have been a cleverly designed source of (free) power or energy as well? It is exciting and boggles the mind, but don't expect mainstream, conventional Egyptology to climb on board any of this any time soon. They are content to believe the lie about Khufu. They are loath to admit that Victorian era antiquarians may have mislead those extant institutions of higher learning for fame and profit. A legacy that muddles the picture and hampers a fresh perspective. For me personally, after all the books I've read on this particular subject; I have come to the conclusion that we are dealing with something far older than we dare imagine. A multi-faceted and purpose built structure, designed by a culture seemingly far brighter than we think we are. A structure (including others on the Giza plateau) that are so 'hoary with age' that they were inherited and, Here's the key, "repurposed" over time by younger civilizations who had forgotten the true genesis of these structures, or who the original builders might have been? These later cultures tried their best to copy these pyramids, and mostly failed to execute such lasting edifices. Hopefully one day we will learn who really built these Giza pyramids, we may never fully comprehend how. For as advanced as we "think" we are, those answers still elude us.In my mind the notion of a "Power Plant" built with machine precision, is not too much of a stretch of ones imagination. Even if this isn't the case, and its intended or inherent purpose was something else altogether; I think many would agree that the Great Pyramid is of a much older provenance, regardless of what mainstream Egyptology (including a shady character named Zawi Hawass) would have us believe. As for Khufu (aka Cheops) being the commissioning pharaoh of this massive and enigmatic undertaking; there is very little, if not suspect or contradictory evidence that he was indeed the guy that said "let it be built." However the evidence (if one is open to it) would suggest that Khufu did, in fact "inherit" the Great Pyramid, which to my thinking is much more plausible.Mind you this was a culture who venerated their esteemed pharaohs with cyclopean statues and yet we find but just one statue of Khufu (now in the Cairo museum) which stands a mighty 3 inches tall! Yeah that makes sense; are we to believe he used up all his "pharaoh monument points" on the Great Pyramid? Sure, that must be what happened. I can just see Biff thumping on Marty's dad's head now, as he shouts; "Wake Up Mcfly!"Perhaps we are the ones that need to "Wake UP" to the true heritage and legacy of our ancient ancestors. Taken collectively, all the cyclopean, monolithic and enigmatic stone structures found all over this planet, it is increasingly clear that we are missing something profound and wondrous about our very ancient, and un-doubtfully 'pre-cataclysmic' past.Read Mr. Dunn's book and decide for yourself. I think you will find that his thesis is very credible, extremely astute and helps to explain some very unusual design features within this enigmatic structure. His book is well written, captivating and hard to put down.

Enjoyed a refreshing look at the remains of ancient Egypt by a qualified engineer. His evidence for construction with advanced methods is interesting, observable, and logical. If our civilization had taken Tesla's research seriously instead of our oil-based, greed-motivated combustion economy, our engineers may developed other methods of generating electricity. Then again, modern Egypt and the Middle East wouldn't have sold any oil.To paraphrase Arthur C Clark:If a scientist states that something is possible, it's almost certainly right. If a scientist states that something is impossible, it's probably wrong. The only way of finding the possible is to go past the impossible.Advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Since I have a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering and am now retired, I found Chris Dunn's theory to be particularly interesting. I know from my own shop experience just how difficult it truly is to repeat high tolerance work on even small, as in what you can hold in the palm of your hand, parts much less something the size of the King's Chamber. And since one of my main functions was chief estimator for putting a price to this kind of work, I also have a pretty good handle on how much work like this costs. So, to suggest that the ancients would put this kind of effort, and cost, into a mere burial chamber is ludicrous, at best. So, if the Giza complex was not built as a burial complex, then what the heck was it built for? And why? And what, other than a finely tuned and superbly crafted machine, would require such an incredible level of high tolerance work and more importantly, repeatable high tolerance work, done over and over and over again. In my opinion, Chris Dunn's work is truly an amazing discovery as well as a masterful piece of detective work. Truly Amazing.

This exploration of the Great Pyramid at Giza is absolutely astonishing. Of the hundred of books I have read in the "fringe" genre, this is definitely one of the very best. Christopher Dunn demonstrates how precision machining was used to create many of the artifacts in and around the pyramid--techniques that rival (and often surpass) those employed today. Dunn expertly shows how the notion of slave labor working with copper chisels and ropes to create these artifacts is simply absurd. A veteran engineer himself, Dunn adroitly presents one of the most compelling and intriguing theories about what the pyramids were (probably) actually for: mass energy production and distribution. This book will literally change everything you know about the ancient past. An absolutely incredible read!

As a novice bird watcher, I have enjoyed using this guide. I have already spotted many birds shown in the guide. It fits in pocket or purse.

Very nice fold out laminated bird guide. Illustrated listing of birds in Alabama. Listed in four categories; Birds of Prey, Perching birds, Doves/woodpeckers, water and nearshore birds. The guide has a map of Alabama birding hotspots. Obviously it doesn't list as much information as a bird guide book would, but if you are just looking for basic identification then this will be perfect for you.

As new backyard birders in Alabama, we think this is terrific. Easy to keep always handy, laminated so mostly waterproof and very sturdy. For us the only downside was that one entire side involved water/near water birds. HOWEVER, since we are ordering one for the car and one for the truck and we visit my parents who have a pond in their front yard, this 'con' will soon be a 'pro'. Best bang for the buck I've seen in a long time.

Love it! I love that it is laminated too!

Love

Bought this for my elderly father, he loves to watch the birds. This is a really nice guide, sturdy and very colorful. Easy to identify the birds. Great product!!

My six year old grandson carries this pocket pamphlet with him everytime he goes outside. He has found the name of several birds using this as a resource. It is very durable and user friendly. However there is not a lot of information on the birds...just pictures and names.

once we got rid of the squirrels we finally got birds to visit and this guide lets us identify out visitors!

I purchased this guide book, which is published by the Vatican Museums and normally available only at its own bookstore (and apparently not online), for an upcoming trip to Rome. I like to guide myself as much as possible, so I can move at my own (slow) pace. This guide is comes complete with everything a visitor could want: a map of the layout of the museums, short and long itineraries, and incredibly detailed and engaging descriptions of each of the galleries and the items they hold.I was pleasantly surprised to find that the guide also has a similarly detailed guide to St. Peter's Basilica as well, including the necropolis underneath with the tomb of St. Peter. There is also a good map of the entire Vatican city-state as well.Everyone who wants to make the most of their visit to both the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica should buy this guide from one of the sellers here on Amazon so they can prepare well in advance.

Great guide to the Vatican! I was able to research what I definitely HAD to see while there. Went to the Vatican very prepared.

I recieved it in just a few days

It is a great guide when it comes to the logistic side of things but I thought there could be more pictures and explanation on some important works at the museum. Nevertheless, if you want to know about the layout and where things are, this is a fantastic guidebook.

High quality book. Detailed information on Vatican exhibitsand rooms. Arrived within a few days of ordering.

I was very unsure about this diet at first, as it seemed to clash so strongly with so many of the wonderful health and diet books I had been reading.Wahls recommendation of a low fat diet that was also very low in saturated fat is the opposite of what highly respected lipid expert Mary Enig PhD recommends, and what is recommended - based on a ton of very convincing evidence - in so many other great books based on maintaining or regaining health through eating the diet our bodies have evolved to do best on, such as Primal Body- Primal Mind, Primal Blueprint, The Perfect Health Diet, Eat Fat-Lose Fat, The GAPS diet and others. So when a friend told me that in fact Dr Wahls has very much changed her stance on fats and saturated fat and now recommends cooking with healthy fats such as coconut oil, butter/ghee (from grassfed cows) and lard, I was really happy to hear it!With that one big issue resolved, this is a diet that tallies hugely with what some of the very best experts in this field are saying and combines the best of what many excellent nutrition books have to say into one dietary plan that I feel is really the best diet out there for anyone battling a serious disease. It is just excellent. I recommend following it if you are ill, very highly.Patients need to read up online about the changes Wahl has made in addition to reading this book, or else just get the information of the diet online while making sure it is up-to-date. (I hope so much that those that have written very pro-low fat fat diet comments about this book on the reviews page will read this updated information somehow. The right fats in the diet are so essential for healing, and for proper mitochondrial function.)The book recommends eating soy products, rice and potatoes and also recommends a low-fat diet. The current diet plan does not support adding these foods to the diet and is a high-fat diet; high in healthy fats. It is a low-sugar and starch, dairy-free, gluten-free and soy-free diet that minimises or eliminates grains, legumes and potatoes. (Some of us need to completely eliminate these. I know I do.)Wahls writes, 'Raw dairy still has casein (protein) that looks like gluten to our immune system. That means raw milk still stimulates immune system problems. For those with food allergies / sensitivities it is still a major problem. Once sensitized - always sensitized. I avoid and strongly urge all with an a chronic disease or autoimmune disease to AVOID. Gluten grains - wheat, rye, barley, and the protein in dairy - can lead to an over active immune reaction -- which then can lead to autoimmune problems, asthma, rashes, mood problems and more. For many going gluten free, dairy free is the beginning of better health. Going fully paleo (no grain and no legumes) for many will lead to even more vitality. But for most - it is a transition that may take several weeks or months. It is ok to start small, but do start the journey..'Wahls' current diet plan, as best as I can work it out, is as follows:* Eating 9 cups of non-starchy vegetables and berries each day (3 cups each of greens, sulfur containing veggies, and colourful veggies) is essential. Choose organic and/or grow your own if you can.* It is okay to take in some of your 9 cups in the form of freshly pressed juices.* Eating good quality grass-fed/free-range/organic meats daily is essential.* Cook with natural fats such as coconut oil, lard and clarified butter/ghee.* Eating organ meats such as liver is recommended at least once a week. Liver is very important for B vitamins. Cooked medium rare is best.* Bone broths are recommended daily. They are full of minerals and help heal the gut.* Eating seaweed once a week or more is recommended.* Eating nuts/seeds or nutritional yeast is recommended daily, including coconut milk.* Eating sprouts is recommended, such as broccoli sprouts.* Eating fermented foods such as unpasturised sauerkraut is recommended.* Eggs are recommended, although people with autoimmune diseases should not have egg whites due to a problematic protein in the egg white. (They should be eliminated at first and added back after a few weeks, and only eaten if there is no reaction to them. Same with nightshades)* Eating small amounts of honey or cocoa is okay, and so is eating natural flavourings in food such as spices and ginger.* Getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids and not too many Omega 6s is important, so Omega 6 containing oils should be minimised and fish oil capsules taken, and foods such as hemp oil, seafood and flax oil eaten. The best ratio is 3:1.Other helpful things:* Vitamin D should be over 50 ng/ml and under 100 ng/ml. (Take a test every 1- 3 months and take 4000 IU vitamin D3 daily, or more if needed. 150 ng/ml is toxic.).* Having daily quiet time is important, to calm down our adrenals. Meditation, massage, nature and family time is also important.* Epson salt baths, melatonin and herbal teas can help sleep.* Minimise toxin exposure and quit smoking.* B complex supplements or sulphur amino acids may be helpful (under a doctor's direction).* Heavy metal testing and treatments such as clay baths and facial clay masks and saunas may be helpful.* A good quality water filter is essential.Wahls also supports ideas such as:* Supplements can in some cases be helpful, but they can never replace a nutrient dense and healthy diet. A proper diet must always come first. Foods contain many beneficial cofactors and other compounds not included in supplements and many that we have not yet even discovered or named.* Getting evaluated for potential food allergies, toxic load issues and more personalised nutritional needs by a practitioner of functional medicine is a very good idea. The Institute for Functional Medicine can help you find a provider in your area.* Drugs are not the answer. Let food, good wholesome food be thy medicine.* "Between the unexpected, unpleasant events in our lives and our response to those events is a space, and in that space we have a choice in deciding what our response will be. We can either give up or get up each day and do our best."* "Epigenetics is how your environment talks to your genes. Our cells are capable of reading the state of our environment and activating or deactivating genes. This means that, based on the choices we make, we can turn on genes for health or turn off those health-promoting genes. In other words, it is your health behaviors such as diet and activities, that determine whether the health-promoting or the health-robbing genes are active. For some conditions, such as cystic fibrosis or hemophilia, our genes are an important factor, often the cause of the disease. But for the obesity, heart disease, mental health and autoimmune epidemics that are driving up the cost of health care in the U.S. and around the world, there are no single genes that are the culprit. Instead, for each of these problems, multiple genes are involved, and they interact in a complex way with the environment."* We need to stop blaming our genes for our illnesses and work on making the best of the 70% that is under our control.* "Yes, it does cost more to eat vegetables. But you will pay the price either way--for food that restores your health and vitality or for doctor visits, drugs, surgery and loss of work due to health problems."* "Functional medicine is really looking at health of the cell. And what can we do to help the individual make the environment for their cells, an environment for doing the biochemistry life more ideal. So that comes down to the fruit you eat or do not eat, the quality of the air you breathe, the water you drink, the toxic load that is in your body is a result of the exposure you had over a lifetime because if you couldn't get the toxins out the day you were exposed to them, they get parked in your fat and did you know that your brain is 70% fat? So if you can't get the toxins out you had today with your whatever your exposure was, you're parking it in your fat and your brain which is going to create havoc over time."Hard to argue with any of that! I agree with all of it. Most of the above are quotes from Dr Wahls, from her many websites.Functional or holistic medicine just makes so much sense. It treats the actual cause of diseases, rather than just blindly drugging everything and focusing on endlessly chasing and minimising symptoms. There are 3 basic principles of the type of medicine discussed by Wahls and others in this same field:A. Get the good stuff in. Give your body the fuel and tools it needs to work at an optimum level. Good food, nutrients and all the proper vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Make sure you aren't deficient in any of the major nutrients as the different nutrients all work together.B. Get the bad stuff out. Make sure your body can detoxify out all the toxic substances and toxic by-products of bodily processes properly. Stop as many toxins from getting in in the first place, and do things which aid detoxification to get rid of the ones you have.C. Reduce your body's total load. The total load concept is that lessening the body's overall burden/work and stress level in one area, will improve health generally and improve the body's ability to heal because the body's total load (or burden) is lessened. Fixing one problem frees up bodily resources that can be then be used to help other parts of the body function getter or to heal. In other words, you need to look at the body as a whole in order to heal, and not just the one part of the body that is generating the most symptoms.------A special note to M.E. patients on the Wahls protocol:Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is a neurological disease similar in some ways to MS, which also causes demyelination and mitochondrial dysfunction. For those with my particular neurological disease, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, it is important that activity levels be kept always within very strict limits, or else relapse will occur. (Death is also a risk in M.E. if overexertion is severe. This is not about symptoms or feeling fatigued, but a problem of cardiac insufficiency, reduced circulating blood volume and POTS and so on which is very serious and non-negotiable. Overexertion always causes a worsening of the disease.) But of course activity levels can and should be raised slowly to keep in line with health improvements in M.E. - this is something that happens naturally anyway. For those unfamiliar with the disease, many M.E. patients are housebound and almost entirely bedbound (and far too ill to use wheelchairs for even small periods of time in a day or week) and limited with even basic communication and reading; which is also part of why I am trying hard to summarise the work of Wahls for them as much as possible. 30 minutes of gravity opposing exercise is probably a great recommendation for almost everyone but should be ommited by M.E. patients unless they can do this without becoming more ill or symptomatic. Also, Wahls says: 'It is common to have some level of detoxification (more fatigue, headache) in the first week which resolves and then improves markedly by week two.' I would say that for M.E. patients this statement is not quite right and is an enormous understatement. M.E. patients will often have quite severe healing reactions to supplementation and changes in diet. These can be severe enough to make a patient no longer able to feed themselves or do other tasks of daily living, as well as leave them in agony. They can also last FAR longer than just a week!It is important for anyone ill to make the dietary changes gradually, and for patients with M.E. this caution should be taken very seriously. Jumping in with both feet too fast could leave you very very ill for months afterward. Healing reactions are a good sign that healing is occurring, but need to be controlled so they don't become overwhelming. Switch to the full diet over a few months at least. Slowly but surely is the way to go! Improvements will almost certainly be slow too, so patience is necessary there as well, especially when the illness has been severe for many years or even several decades or more.M.E. patients will also often do far better eating cooked veggies rather than raw, which can be too difficult and painful for us to digest. (For more M.E. patient-specific tips and cautions see the HFME website.)-------This diet is described as an MS diet, but really this diet is the diet we have all evolved to be best suited to. All of us need such a nutrient-dense and low-toxicity diet, and so I hope people with all sorts of diseases look into the Wahls diet and not just those with neurological diseases. The diet can also help where there is not yet a correct diagnosis. We all need the right amounts of the nutrients that enable healing, no matter what disease we have. For some people following this diet plan will be enough, but for others a higher level of intervention will be required in addition to the diet. The first step toward healing has to be an excellent diet and good gut health, combined with minimising toxin exposures. If more help is needed then, as Wahls explains, it is best to see a Functional/Holistic medicine expert so that it can be determined what extra supplements or other supports you may need. The key is learning about your own 'biochemical individuality.' There are so many tests now which can be done to determine where your detoxification pathways are failing, which nutrients you need more of or have problems utilising or why your gut is still not functioning right. For those that can't find or can't afford to see a Functional/Holistic medicine expert, or cannot see any medical expert due to being housebound etc., an excellent companion to Wahls book are the books by Functional/Holistic medicine experts such as Dr Sherry Rogers. Dr Rogers tells you exactly which tests may help you, how to treat more complex gut problems and how to go about following a more intensive detoxification regime involving a detox cocktail and FIR sauna use. Dr Rogers books are to some extent `do-it-yourself' health books but ideally Dr Rogers recommends that you get well with the help of a qualified practitioner that will be able to order the appropriate tests for you, and also help you interpret them.Dr Sherry Rogers writes in `Detoxify or Die',`I have to laugh when people ask me if I do alternative, herbal, acupuncture or holistic medicine. 'No,' I reply. 'We do state-of-the-art medicine. In other words, we find the biochemical, nutritional and environmental causes and cures rather than blindly drugging everything. Sure, herbs are gentler, safer and more physiologic than drugs and holistic medicine attempts to incorporate many diverse modalities, etc. But there is no substitute for finding the underlying biochemical causes and cures. This is real medicine. This is where medicine should and would have been decades ago, if it had not been abducted by the pharmaceutical industry.'Following a super-high-quality diet is also the foundation of Dr Rogers' treatment plan and so starting with the Wahls diet (which is the best there is) and then moving on (if necessary) to follow Dr Rogers' advice on advanced detoxification techniques just makes so much sense. The best book of hers to start with is Detoxify or Die. It is just brilliant and very easy to read as well. It has so much good information and support for sauna use and so much more. Her book 'The Safe, Effective Way to Prevent and Heal Chronic Gastrointestinal Disorders' is also excellent. In addition to books by Dr Sherry Rogers I'd also recommend books and articles by Dr Lawrence Wilson (particularly his book on sauna use), Dr Klenner, Dr Abram Hoffer, Andrew Saul, Sally Fallon and Mary Enig and any and all of the vitamin C and orthomolecular experts such as Linus Pauling and Dr Thomas Levy. Other excellent books on diet and nutrition (with huge amounts in common with the Wahls diet) include Primal Body-Primal Mind, The Primal Blueprint, The Perfect Health Diet and Deep Nutrition as well as books on the GAPS diet for the treatment of dysbiosis and a diet-based plan to heal the gut.Gut health is so important and if gut health is poor, then your body can't properly use all the wonderful nutritious food you are eating. Many of us need to heal the gut first of all, and this may at first involve supplements such as Betaine HCL, enzymes and probiotics, as well as dietary changes, as these books explain. All of these books, along with Wahls book, are far more than just standard Paleo diet books.Combining the excellent Wahls diet with the advice on detoxification by Dr Rogers (including the use of an FIR sauna and a daily detox cocktail and 'oil change' nutrients and digestive supports) has seen me finally start to slowly improve my health this last year and a half. I'm slowly improving month by month from a very severe neurological disease - thanks in part to the work of Dr Wahls and Dr Rogers, and others like them - that has left me housebound and almost entirely bedbound for many years. I have been housebound and almost entirely bedbound (and far too ill to even use a wheelchair, or even the phone) for over 10 years and I got ill when I was just 19. Getting slowly worse and worse year after year was terrifying, especially when I was so ill and disabled already.I wish so much I had had this information early on in my disease, rather than coming to it more than 10 years in. Healing is so much easier the earlier you start it.I wont know how much of my damage is irreversible until I improve a lot more (a LOT more I hope!) and find out where I plateau. But for those that have been ill 'only' 5 or 7 years or less, or that are not severely ill, I do think these approaches could be curative or very close to it. At the very least they will undo as much damage as can be undone. My big dream is to get to a 30% function level, where I can live independently.... I'm still so far away from that currently, but I am at least making slow but sure progress now! Being able to cook a little this last year after 8 years or more not being able to even make myself a cup of tea has been just so wonderful. Cooking myself an egg is a joyful experience! It is so wonderful to now each month be getting small UNsymptoms and UNdisabilities!I have learned so much about health that I would never have known if I had not become so ill and been forced to learn it!The Wahls Foundation is a nonprofit organisation that hopes to raise funds to do research on this diet. Buying this book helps fund their research. The book is mostly recipes and reading more of her ideas online is so helpful. I'd highly recommend watching all her free videos online (watch out for the loud sound on some of them - ouch!), plus her FB page and blog and website. They are all so helpful.Dr Wahls is the real deal and is clearly motivated by a genuine desire to help ill people improve their health. I wish her and her Foundation all the best and thank them for all their wonderful work. This is real cutting edge medicine.Best wishes for future health to anyone still reading this far!Jodi Bassett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for M.E. (HFME) and Health, Healing & Hummingbirds (HHH)

I have had MS for at least 15 years. Our son, now 22, has recovered from autism using a similar diet plan. So, all was not new to me. This book isexcellent and fully researched. In addition it is full of information and advice on recommended supplements. In the span of 4 months I came back to life. It is though my life is starting all over again. I have not fallen since May, and I can now exercise--with intensity--for over thirty minutes. Prior to the diet I fell often and could not exercise more than 5 minutes. My quality of life was getting worse, not improving. My greatest concern is for my vision and I am grateful that my optic neuritis has also greatly improved. This diet is not for sissies--it is tough. A simple common sense plan that requires great commitment to implement.I studied Minding My Mitochondria and the Better Brain Book (Dr. David Perlmutter--neurologist) side by side. I wish they would join together and write a new book. :)Both brilliant doctors who practice compassion, common sense and the belief that your brain can be healed if it is nourished. If you want to be healed--this I have not yet attained--or improve your situation--there is no risk here in working towards that goal. I know I know, MS can't be healed. Well--says who? I have lived long enough (50) to now know that there are massive errors in the current medical system. We only live once and we should try.As I tell everyone--the most difficult day on this diet is better than the best day off of it.So what if I am high maintenance? I am in the game. This is a long journey of healing the body--and I have more steps to go. But this diet restored my life.Thank you Terry Wahls and David Permutter!

A year ago I watched Dr. Wahl's TED talk, and it changed my life. Recently, I purchased this book. For those of you for whom understanding is key, this book will lay out for you exactly what is amiss with your health from a dietary standpoint, and why/how the diet promoted by the Wahl's protocol is effective for healing. For the first time in 25 years, I have stable energy, virtually no fatigue, and am pain-free (no longer assisted by daily usage of morphine just to get out of bed). Though I found my dietary changes effective, I do wish I had read this book earlier. I have a better idea of how to tweak my diet for consistent health and healing, and I have better focus about how to formulate my eating plan. I had hesitated to exercise due to the fear of pain, especially now that I am not relying upon pain medication. After reading the book, I now understand why exercise and movement is essential to my healing. After learning how and why you should eat for healing, Dr. Wahl's provides recipes and sample menus as well as sources for some items. A daily log is available so that you can check off your target/required daily intake as you go. Especially helpful is the glossary - those medical terms are not common knowledge for many of us! You will be impressed by the more than 25-page reference list of supporting documentation (published medical research as annotated and referenced throughout the book). It's one thing for a doctor to tell someone what to do to correct their diet and health, but it's another thing to see this doctor leading by example - the patient, doctor, and testimonial all in one. This diet is tried and true and has guidelines that will undoubtedly support health for everyone, not just those seeking specific healing action. Please note, I do NOT have MS. I have a 25 year history of severe allergies, sinus infections, migraines, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue. I was medically discharged from my service as a Marine Corps officer, and am rated for disability by the Veteran's Administration. After one full year of dietary change consistent with the Wahl's Protocol, I continue to see additional changes marking my health. The whites of my eyes are fully white, no yellowing, red lines, etc. I have strong fingernails and healthy skin. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Changes from the inside out - no creams, lotions, OTC or prescription "cures", just good eating. Find out from Dr. Wahl's book how you can heal and change your life - it's easier than you think!
