Fabulos! Better as expected.

The designs featured in this book are medieval and old-world Folk-Art designs. The patterns are easy to read, and although the charts are in black and white, due to the graphic nature of the patterns they are easy to read and follow. The book starts out with a variety of pictures of samplers, followed by 4 pages of small sampler motives, so the reader can design his or her own sampler. Towards the end of the book a medieval tapestry pattern is offered with the same concept for DIY design. The patterns also include an Icelandic star and a blue and white tapestry, inspired by a horse cover for a lady's side saddle. Overall the book holds what it promises, but would be better if it would include better photography of finished needlework projects, instead of just showing tiles of the work. It is a good book for a very specific audience and taste, and certainly worth a look.

The book is beautiful and I hope it will bey very useful as well. I am looking forward using it and will start with sewing the Icelandic star in blue. The item I got is used and signed by the author and it should be an good inspiration also because it is signed the 11th jun 1999 on my grandmothers birthday. I wonder where this book will take me, it is filled with unexpected adventures.

Excellent book on old Icelandic tapestry design, in needlepoint. Jona Sparey gives good instructions and her colour-selections is wonderful. I look forward to make some of my own, starting with one of the small ones.

This is not just a beautiful book but it inspires beautiful food. The recipes are very good, but by reading the recipes you can make your own dishes with the ingredients you have available. This is a great concept book. If you have some experience in the kitchen, you can apply the concepts in the book to your own style. Reading this book is a journey deep into the experience of Southeast Asia. It is as much a travel log and a book of amazing little photographs as it is a cook book. Highly recommend it.

This is my favorite cookbook! I own hundreds of cookbooks because I am a food blogger and researcher. I look for pleasing photographs of the finished recipe, easy to find ingredients, and clear instructions to put all of this together. This has an authentic look in the Vietnamese culinary landscape and I never allow myself to run out of the Vietnam table sauce!!! For a Pennsylvania girl who doesn't live near any Vietnamese cuisine.....this was the right choice for me!!!!

If you have curiosity and interest in Asian foods, (and have gotten this far with your curiosity and interests!) you will be very pleased by your reading of "Hot Sour Salty Sweet". It starts out with geography...the flow of the Mekong River from China, as it touches on Burma and Thailand, and goes right through Laos, Cambodia and South Vietnam.As the river meanders, then builds up force, the authors' tale grows stronger and richer as well. As you learn about the complex network of varied peoples, (yet quite different in culture and tastes) who are spread across this riverbed, be it the Han, Hmong, Bai, Karen, or Khmer and Cham, you are introduced by the nuances of geography, recipes and tribal descriptions to the people, and to the unique foods and diets enjoyed with each region's local spices and traditions. One group may never use pork, another uses fish sauce instead of salt, water buffalo is the preferred meat in some regions, coconuts do not grow in the North and stronger spices tend ot be used there, with coconut milk and seafood more commonly used as the river heads south towards the Mekong delta.Ever wonder why some Chinese or Thai restaurants taste "different" from each other, even in the USA or whatever country you may be sampling such cuisine? Well, this book may at times educate you (just a little bit) to the ethnic origin of the person as they cook the food with their own special touches added. Ask the cook at your restaurant about their culinary background, to learn more!The recipes can be transformed from printed page into tasty food with a visit to a local Asian grocery store, if available, visiting "Whole Foods" or "Fresh Market" type specialty grocery stores in larger cities, or via internet shopping to find a mail order source. The ingredients are not really expensive, and a regular person can make some common sense substitutions, to have a quite tasty meal.I freeze the white bases of lemongrass stalks cut to size, and separately freeze some herbs in thier individual ice cube trays, and they are quite tasty when melted down. Do not use dried lemongrass, as it lacks the right taste! So, having uncommon ingredients handy isn't such a problem, especially when you may not cook more than one or two Asian meals within a few month period.The recipe instructions are simple and thorough; these are not complex and delicate French sauces to be carefully created over hours... however, the complexity of tastes and textures of some Asian dishes can be no less complex than French, Indian or other cuisines.Having a wok and gas stove/range is helpful for some recipes, however I've done quite well with a skillet on an electric/ceramic top stove. If you really want to "cook with gas", get the "Big Kahuna Burner"...it's exactly the firepower used throughout Asia, and the price is right on Amazon! (I've reviewed it on Amazon, and have no bias or connection to it other than it's "the real thing"!)The special bonus in the book is the inclusion of beautiful colorful photos of the varied peoples in the area served by the Mekong, as they harvest food, prepare and eat it, or go about their business.This makes me want to go back and see, taste and savor more of Asia!

Probably my favourite ever cookbook. The recipes, the travels, the photos - are all extraordinary. I first borrowed it from the library but soon realised I had to have my own copy. Some of the recipes are ridiculously easy. All you need is a mortar and pestle and fresh ingredients. The peppercorn and coriander root paste is now a staple part of my diet. If youI've cooking and eating Asian food, then I cannot recommend this book enough.

One of my favorite books, period. There are some excellent recipes, yes, but I treasure this book as much for the great story it tells of a part of the world I love dearly. HSSS inspired me to quit a dead-end job and travel the world with my Better Half for the better part of a year, an experience that enriched us both immensely in every way.

I too have stacks of cookbooks and this is definitely one of the best. A few points:Unless you live in one of the 3 or 4 biggest cities, this food is going to look like it is from Mars (nay, even most the people in Los Angeles, arguably the best city in the world for sheer depth and breadth of ethnic food, would probably find that this book is completely outside their realm of experience). And amazingly, it doesn't really fit into one neat little bucket; following the Mekong River, this book hits on 5 distinct cuisines:1. Vietnamese2. Laotian3. Cambodian4. Northern Thai (Esaan)5. Islamic ChineseEven in Los Angeles, it is almost impossible to find Esaan food, which is quite different from the Royal Thai cuisine that the country has fallen in love with. Vietnamese is an amazing cuisine that seems to be spreading significantly (if with more emphasis on rice noodle bowls than tendon soup).If you are interested in the history of food, this is also a fascinating tract. In the West, the history has two phases: before and after ready access to salt, the prior phase being dominated by what are called 'masking spices' (some of which came from the east) and then the whole history of integral sauce making afterward. One of the big points made in this book is that in the East, the focus is on the balance of flavors (see title), and, most importantly, the final targeting is done by the consumer (whereas in the West, spicing a dish from a gourmet restaurant is an act of sedition). Not to indict either one: take a lesson from the book: celebrate the differences.

Anna-Marie McLemore’s When the Moon Was Ours is one of the most stunning novels I’ve ever read. It’s a short novel, but I found myself pausing every few pages because McLemore’s writing was so beautiful, I needed a moment to truly appreciate it. Taking inspiration from the folklore of La Llorona, McLemore weaves a tale about a boy and girl trying to discover who they are in a world that doesn’t quite understand them. Miel’s past is a mystery, from the moment she emerged from the water tower, her past has been locked up deep inside her. Most people aren’t sure what to make of her and the roses that grow from her wrist, but she’s always found a companion in Sam, a transgender boy who’s always felt like an outsider himself. Sam is trying to understand his own gender identity while also trying to appease those around him. Though it was hard to read when people tried to take advantage of Sam and “expose” him, it was an honest display of how many believe they have more of a right to determine someone’s identity than the person themselves does. McLemore’s characters are a mix of vulnerability and strength; her story is both dark and whimsical; and her words are moving and breathtaking. It’s novels like When the Moon Was Ours that make me love the genre of magical realism even more. If you haven’t picked up Anna-Marie McLemore’s novels yet, I strongly encourage you to do so.

This book has been on my TBR for quite a while now, and there's a reason for it. There are books out there that are so hyped and with concepts so painfully up my alley that utterly utterly let me down. Sometimes friends and writers and readers whose opinions I completely trust still love those books, and I have this almost visceral confusion over what I've missed or even what they missed. Was I too critical? Did I just not understand it? Why didn't I enjoy this book I hoped to love when so many people did?I've heard nothing but good things about this book, literally not a single negative review from anyone I know (as opposed to people down in the reviews below, I mean). Add in the fact that just the dedication alone had me tearing up, and I got almost terrified of reading this book and discovering I didn't like it as much as I thought I would.But y'all. This book. THIS FREAKING BOOK. I legitimately cried from about halfway through until the end of the book. I went through half a box of tissues in sheer 'oh my HEART' tears, and once I was finished with it, I sat on my bed just holding it closed to my chest for a good ten minutes in that book hangover paralysis.It was just stunning. I don't know what else to say besides that.

Content warnings: transphobia (challenged), incidents similar to self-harm, child abuseWhen I read a particularly beautiful or arresting passage of a book, I linger on it, letting the words roll around in my mouth to savor their texture and flavor. It doesn't happen with every book; when it does, it's usually not that often and only consists of a couple of sentences. To my shock and utter delight, though, When the Moon Was Ours was filled almost entirely with these kinds of passages, consisting of whole chapters that made me slow down and marvel at their otherworldly beauty.This is the story of Miel, a Latinx girl who washed out of a water tower one day and has roses growing out of her wrist, and Samir, a Pakistani boy who hangs the moon wherever he can. The whole town believes Miel is a fearsome witch because of her roses and her emergence from the water and the fact that she lives with a curandera named Aracely who cures the lovesick people of the town. The truly fearsome witches, however, may be the Bonner girls, las gringas bonitas, who beguile the boys and men of the town and take whatever they want for themselves...including Miel's roses.Anna-Marie McLemore's prose is shimmering and poetic, creating a dreamlike narrative that showcases the beauty and wistfulness of magical realism. Glass pumpkins grow out of the ground in jewel tones. Lovesickness takes physical form, flying out of a window once it's been wrenched from the body of a spurned lover. A mysterious woman emerges fully formed from a cloud of thousands of butterflies. McLemore's lyrical style breathes life into her delicate fairy tale, showing readers the possibility that lies within each of us to become who we are truly meant to be.The idea of becoming yourself and living your truth applies to all the characters in the book, but it would be an act of erasure on my part to pull focus from the story of Samir, the transgender boy who hangs the moon. For the most part, Samir's friends and family give him the time and space he needs to understand his true feelings and true self, and we get the privilege of seeing him work through the complicated thoughts and emotions that come with being a trans teen.I'm cisgender, so please take my opinions here with every grain of salt in existence, but Samir's depiction feels insightful and authentic to me. His characterization is empathetic and lovingly crafted — in the acknowledgments and the author's note, McLemore states that her relationship with her husband, who is trans, inspired much of the story. She also says that he helped her a great deal in writing Samir by answering questions about his experiences as a trans boy; that level of care and intimacy shines through in the book, which is one of the most touching coming out stories and one of the loveliest romances I've ever read.When the Moon Was Ours is a tale that will wrap you up and whisper to you, promising heartache and pain but assuring you that it will all be worth it in the end. It will tell you that who you are inside is who you really are; it will tell you that no one else has the right to decide what to do with your name or your body or your identity. It will tell you that magic exists, that hope exists, that possibility exists. And — especially for the brilliant, shining time that you spend lost in its pages — it will be right.
