Review

"Anne Keene's remarkable The Cloudbuster Nine is a terrific piece of research into a forgotten corner of American history―a place where the myths of major league baseball intersect with the myths of the Second World War. It is also a place inhabited by her own father, who becomes the myth that ties it all together. An excellent read!" ―S. C. GWYNNE, author of New York Times bestsellers Empire of the Summer Moon and Rebel Yell "My father Ted Williams firmly believed, 'Perfection is attainable if you dare to work hard enough.' I applaud Anne Keene for capturing the untold historical facts of the first group of men who were sent to Chapel Hill for this path breaking Naval aviation training program. Coupled with fantastic photos (many of which I had never seen of my father), the stories come to life with amazement in The Cloudbuster Nine." ―CLAUDIA WILLIAMS, author, Ted Williams, My Father  Named among top "12 Titles for the New Baseball Season" ―Newsday Magazine"... combines elements of 'Field of Dreams' and 'The Right Stuff' with the story of a long-forgotten military baseball team."―Lincoln Journal Star"Anne Keene's new book is not just about baseball, it's about life."―PAT WILLIAMS, senior vice president of the NBA's Orlando Magic      Among 12 authors nominated for CASEY Award Best Baseball Book of 2018, Spitball Magazine "In Anne Keene's quest to learn about the Gods of baseball shadowed by her father as a child at the Pre-Flight School, she uncovers an unexplored world and teaches us about the largely-overlooked athletic training programs of the Second World War. Well-written and impeccably researched, this captivating book offers new insights into the training that forged some of the most fabled members of the Greatest Generation."  ―BILL NOWLIN, author or editor of more than seventy books on baseball including Ted Williams at War "Baseball fans―both avid and casual―will devour this book like a stadium hot dog. Keene's previously untold story of The Cloudbuster Nine, an unlikely team of Navy pilots-in-training, headlined by the great Ted Williams, is a master stroke of research. It is also a highly readable portrait of a time when Americans pulled together for a greater cause.Interwoven in the main narrative about heroes-on-the-diamond is the poignant story of Keene's father, the team bat boy, who wanted nothing more than a baseball career and lived a life of bitter regret. Her skills as a storyteller will make the reader taste the Gulden's mustard on their hot dogs and hear the crack of every bat. Riveting!" ―KATHRYN SMITH, journalist and author of The Gatekeeper: Missy Le Hand,FDR, and the Untold Story of the Partnership That Defined a Presidency"An important story enriched by solid research and authorial commitment."―Kirkus Reviews"The Cloudbuster Nine brings to life a long-overlooked piece of baseball and World War II history. It's an amazing oral history that tells an important story about how our cultural fabric of baseball was intertwined with the spirit and character of men in uniform during our greatest conflict. It is so well written and researched that I couldn't put it down." ―C. PAUL ROGERS III, co-writer of four baseball books, including Lucky Me, My Sixty-Five Years in Baseball with Eddie Robinson"A previously untold tale of a time when playing the game was second to service to one's country. It's also a story of a daughter who comes to fully understand her father's love of that game and his disappointment that he never achieved his dream to remain a part of it. A great read wrapped around two of my loves - aviation and baseball."―Lt. Gen. ROBERT "BOOMER" MILSTEAD JR, USMC (RET.) "This truly is an untold story. Who knew the retired Babe Ruth returned to both Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park as a manager of a wartime fund-raising team called the Yanklands (a contraction of Yankees and Cleveland Indians)? Or that he would face Ted Williams, then on active duty with a powerful Navy team? Few baseball history books share that information and none in such great detail."― Sports Collectors Digest, Top 25 Baseball Books for 2018 "This book should be read by anyone who enjoys reading about baseball, military stories, World War II history―or even just good stories. It is truly a wonderful piece of work." ―LANCE SMITH, The Guy Who Reviews Sports Books blog"A beautifully told, family-related adventure about Ted Williams― one of the game's biggest names―and the Chapel Hill Cloudbusters―one of the game's least-known teams. Written with passion and tension, The Cloudbuster Nine is a must-read for anyone who loves their baseball with a twist of nostalgia."―GARY BEDINGFIELD, British WWII baseball historian who founded Baseball in Wartime networkRanked among "Top 3 Bestsellers in Amazon's Teen and Young Adult Baseball and Softball"― January 2019 ranking"This book will be cherished by those who appreciate baseball's unique history and its role in American life."―Brooklyn Digest

Anne Keene's THE CLOUDBUSTER NINE is a fascinating and engaging story. Keene tells the tale of the naval aviation training program that took place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (and four other sites) during World War II. On one level, the book provides a powerful and revealing look at some of the men of the Greatest Generation as they prepared to fight for America's freedom--men like George H. W. Bush and John Glenn. But the book is also a delightful and impressively researched story about some of the major league baseball players--Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky, for example--who trained as pilots and played ball for a team called the Cloudbuster Nine, a squad that played several exhibitions against other major leaguers (Babe Ruth appears in the book as another individual who contributed to the war effort in his own way). Finally, the book is a touching and emotional memoir that relates the experiences of Keene's father, the team's bat boy and later an aspiring minor league pitcher. The book is filled with memorable anecdotes and photographs. I would recommend it to any reader who enjoys World War II history or little-known facts about some of America's great heroes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Cloudbuster Nine. Amazingly researched, Anne Keene's book reads like a novel even though it presents a real life history of an important time in our country. The story goes way beyond Ted Williams and the Chapel Hill fighter pilot baseball team, giving the context of the events from a worldwide historical perspective. Touching personal stories are interspersed throughout the book, which not only draw the reader forward but make it one of the most heartwarming tributes I've read. A must read for baseball lovers, history buffs, and anyone who wants to be transported back to a time of real heroes.

This is a great book! Anne is a terrific writer, hopefully there will be more to come from her. You don’t have to be a sports’ fan to enjoy this book. It is filled with tons of details on pilot training at UNC during WW2. Anne’s terrific account of her Dad’s baseball career and his love of the game is so interesting, heartwarming and at times sad. There are stories about Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, The Babe and so many other stars. I loved “Cloudbuster 9”!

A fun read. Anne Keene tells a story that not many Americans know about. Military and baseball historical buffs will find this work informative and interesting. As a middle aged student of history and baseball in particular" The Cloudbuster Nine" more than satisfies on several levels. This is a work that blends history and a personal family relationship. Major Leaguers like Ted Williams , Johnny Pesky and Johnny Sain are bought to life in different roles than on the diamond. An extensively researched book. All in all a very touching story. It is no doubt that these pilots represented the " Greatest Generation" in a supreme way. But, everyone on the home front pitched in. It is essential that the younger generations of our nation are exposed to the history of this era.

Although I purchased this book to add to those I already own about my childhood idol, I found that it covers a much broader topic in addition to its portraits of Ted, Pesky, and the other players on this team of Naval pilot cadets. Basically, the author is searching for an answer to why her father, who was the team's bat boy, became an embittered and emotionally withdrawn adult despite his lifelong love for baseball. Her discovery of his dusty trunk filled with forgotten photographs became the basis for her research. There are only 45 men alive who played in the major leagues and also served in WWII. She was able to interview a number of these individuals, now in their nineties, and her book will be enjoyed by anyone who treasures baseball history and the history of an America which is rapidly vanishing.

What a well researched, wonderful story. Every American should read and appreciate what the greatest generation sacrificed for us. This book is inspiring.

This book reads so easily and appeals to a wide audience - especially women and mothers of players who appreciate the game of baseball and the example set by those WWII players who paused their careers to serve in the war. A read for several generations.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Cloudbuster Nine" by Anne Raugh Keene, cover to cover. Ms. Keene transported me back in history, revealing the little known story of some of baseball's greats during World War II. The author also wove her latter-day personal story and search, which gripped at my heart. I highly recommend "The Cloudbuster Nine".
