#39,305 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I checked my mailbox at least five times today, and finally, both the book and sketchbook arrived!! I have spent the evening reading Samantha Dion Baker’s beautiful, helpful, and inspirational book!I have only recently begun following Samantha Dion Baker on Instagram, and I was immediately hooked. I have completed three Draw Your Day sketches in a watercolor sketch book, posted them on IG, and received a comment from the author! 💕 I was pretty excited.I am only a beginning sketcher, but I love her book and the idea of capturing our daily lives with words and drawings!! It’s a great book!!

I loved “Draw Your Day”. I read it from cover to cover including the journal pages. For me, as an artist with experience, I was delighted to find bits here and there that either were new or reminded me of things I sometimes forget. Example, facial proportions, rule of odds (using 3 or 5 objects). The chapter on inspiration was so helpful to me. I know it’s a common problem for creative people. I also found the materials section to be helpful. I have much of what is recommended but not everything. I’ve been doing hand lettering the same way for 30 years and loved learning about some new pens to try! The chapter on “now it’s time to draw” was well done and points beginners and professionals to look for YouTube videos and specific how-to books if you want. The sentence about you don’t have to draw; just put dots and words on the page was particularly insightful and encouraging. I think “Draw Your Day” belongs on the bookshelf or night table of anyone who aspires to express himself or herself in words and/or pictures, at any level of expertise.

I've been following Samantha's instagram journaling for years and couldn't wait for her book to arrive. It is as inspiring as it is practical. The images are beautiful, but as importantly, the book is full of helpful advice - everything from suggestions on how to get started, tips on layout, color, and design, and tools to help you begin a practice of an illustrated journal. Inspired by Sam's instagram feed, our family has kept a "family journal" for years - but this book has helped us take it to a new level. We can't wait to play around with her suggestions for how to "draw text" and add collage to our pages. Even my youngest who can't read yet, loves just looking at the sumptuous illustrations. What I love most about this book though, is that I'm not an artist, and I will never be able to draw or design as well as Samantha, but she provides entry points for whatever your skill level is, and cheers you on throughout - inspiring and encouraging, never making it seem like this is something only artists can do.

Last night I finally received Samantha Dion Baker's "Draw Your Day" and the "Draw Your Day Sketchbook." After months of anticipation, I could not be more pleased! Not only is Samantha an amazing illustrator, but this girl can write!!! "Draw Your Day" is jam-packed with inspiration. Samantha breaks down her sketch journal process to enable the reader to find their own process to capture their days. Materials, techniques and ideas are all explored in detail, all with accompanying examples of Samantha's own beautiful pages! The "Draw Your Day Sketchbook" is a wonderful companion piece - allowing the reader to begin sketching their own days with inspiring prompts provided! If you have any thoughts of journaling and don't know where to begin, buy this book today!

I have been following Samatha Dion Baker on instagram for quite a while and love her journal pages and the glimpses into her creative day. So when this book came out I knew I had to have it and it is lovely! The book itself is a great size with thick, creamy paper that feels wonderful. The content is less a how to and more an engaging pep talk on how to get started with lots of images from her own sketchbooks to serve as examples and inspiration. The writing is open and down to earth and is quite relaxing to read. I would recommend this as a great starting point for someone looking to get into sketch journaling or travel journaling!

I was unaware of the author's instagram, which makes this find even more special! I adore the illustrations sprinkled liberally throughout the book, as well as the down to earth, conversational approach to telling her story. This is not really an "instructional" or how-to book; it's more inspiration for your own journaling adventure. Lots of ideas to be found here though, and now I definitely follow the artist on Instagram!

I've been following Samantha Dion Baker's work on Instagram for years now and pre-ordered this book as soon as she let us know it was out. I read the entire book the first weekend I received it and was so touched by the thoughtfulness, encouragement and helpful tips put into this book. It was a great blend of Samantha's personal journey, why the daily drawing has impacted her life, what it means to her family, and how she can sometimes secretly capture memories and remember them years later for her and her children to remember some day. This book was especially wonderful because she focused on how anyone could benefit. You don't have to be an experienced artist, writer or journalist. It doesn't have to be beautiful or shared with the world. The point is that everyone's daily life - no matter how routine, mundane or seemingly boring can reveal moments of wonder, joy, small pleasures through a PRACTICE of looking each day. It reminded me that life is happening now, and the small moments add up (like compound interest) to create our own personal journey.Such a simple and lovely book, but the meaning behind it is POWERFUL and fantastic. Thank you Sam for sharing your heart and your pages with all of us.

I loved this book, finished it in 3 days and ordered another for my kids! Very inspiring! I rate this right up there with Danny Gregory's "Creative License."

Review

Praise for God Save Texas"Superb . . . [Wright's] most personal work yet, an elegant mixture of autobiography and long-form journalism, remarkably free of elitist bias on the one hand, and pithy guidebook pronouncements on the other." —David Oshinsky, The New York Times Book Review (cover)“A love letter to a place . . . Wright writes about Texas with the fervor, knowledge, and ambivalence that comes from deep-seated familiarity.” —Willard Spiegelman, The Wall Street Journal“After tackling 9/11 and Scientology, journalist Lawrence Wright wrangles his toughest subject yet: home, the Lone Star State. With a balance of deep reporting and memoir, the New Yorker staff writer offers a personal history of Texas, a place both singular and the bellwether of American politics and morality. It’s a different approach, and one that Wright nails.” —GQ“Rings true on every page.” —Michael Barnes, austin360"Essential reading not just for Texans, but for anyone who wants to understand how one state changed the trajectory of the country . . . Wright is one of the most talented journalists Texas has ever produced, and God Save Texas is him at his best. It's a thoughtful, beautifully written book." —Michael Schaub, NPR“Compelling . . . timely . . . There is a sleeping giant in Texas, and Wright captures the frustration and the hope that reverberate across the state each time it stirs.” —Cecile Richards, The Washington Post “Terrific . . . all-encompassing . . . [fueled] with literary tension . . . Wright’s words could speak for both Texas and America.” —Chris Vognar, The Dallas Morning News“Gripping . . .  Whether you love Texas or hate Texas, you will likely find God Save Texas a very funny and a very informative book about a place unlike any other on the face of the earth.” —Jonah Raskin, New York Journal of Books“The most entertaining and edifying nonfiction book I’ve read so far this year . . . There’s a jaw-dropping portrait on the shocking shenanigans of the Texas legislature; hymns to the natural beauty in the state’s far-flung nooks and crannies, and a spot-on analysis of Texas’s boom and bust economy. . . .[Wright] is a rare beast: an elegant writer and a fearless reporter, with a sense of humor as dry as the plains of west Texas.” —Mary Ann Gwinn, The Seattle Times“Thoroughly explore[s] the political past, present and future of the Lone Star State.” —Ryan Bort, Rolling Stone"There is a noticeable and refreshing lack of defensiveness in Wright's journey through Texas . . . Quirky anecdotes, philosophical musings on culture, and hyperlocal travel writing abound." —Elizabeth Catte, Boston Review“A godsend . . . Thorough and concise . . . A brilliant analysis.” —Marion Winik, Newsday“Vivid . . . Omnivorous . . . Affectionate and genial . . . Captures the full range of Texas in all its shame and glory . . . An illuminating primer for outsiders who may not live there but have a surfeit of opinions about those who do . . . [It’s] a testament to Wright’s formidable storytelling skills that a reader will encounter plenty of information without ever feeling lost.” —Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times“If you listen to one audiobook this year, make it this one . . . Wright’s gentle Texas accent infuses his tale of the Lone Star State with humor and depth.” —Joshua Kim, Inside Higher Ed"Wright focueses his razor-sharp lens inward and on his home state, [interjecting] personal anecdotes to enliven the facts and figures." —Michelle Newby, Lone Star Literary Life“A campfire stew of memoir, reportage and historical digression. Wright is a typically Texas storyteller, an anecdotalist who wanders around and stops occasionally to point out the view, but somehow you end up getting where you’re going anyway. . . . Pleasing.” —Benjamin Markovits, The Guardian “A deeply personal narrative . . . Informative and entertaining . . . Having been born and raised in Texas, I found myself not only intrigued with revisiting the depth of history of my home state as told by Wright, but also with the insights God Save Texas afforded me on my current home here in West Virginia.” —Michael Amason, Herald-Dispatch"Splendid . . . A critical, affectionate account of modern Texas, matched only by Larry McMurtry's great essay Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen." —Allen Lane, The Spectator  “Wright tames his sprawling subject matter with concise sentences and laser-precise word choice . . . Gives readers a front-row seat to the battle within the Texas GOP between business-oriented conservatives, led by House Speaker Joe Straus, and the social-conservative wing headed up by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.” —Chris Gray, Houston Chronicle“A fascinating look ahead through the lens of a singular state . . . Filled with larger-than-life Texas characters . . . For every Texas stereotype Wright explores, there’s something that blows it up.” —Colette Bancroft, The Tampa Bay Times  “Exhilarating . . . Wright has outdone himself in his latest literary effort.” —Dr. Manuel Flores, Caller Times (Texana Reads)“The book’s 14 chapters dance between meditations on cities, culture, and politics, and all of them dive into what it means to be a Texan.” —Olivia Messer, The Daily Beast“Wright’s affectionate, eye-opening, and, at times, rueful love letter to his native state . . . This is Texas in all its fascinating outrageousness.” —Kevin O’Kelly, The Christian Science Monitor“Amid the state legislature’s fights over bathroom bills, feral hog abatement programs, and a bill allowing the hunting of wild pigs from hot air balloons, the reader comes away with an idea that the state is a place of competing melodies: a bit of Austin country, a few measures of Roy Orbison, a riff from Buddy Holley and, for Wright, maybe a stanza of ‘Home on the Range.’” —David M. Shribman, The Boston Globe“[A] compelling and insightful potpourri of history, encounters, and observations . . . Wright has managed to sew together a patchwork quilt of a narrative into a substantive State of the state.” —Bob Ruggiero, Houston Press“Wright, a lifelong Texan, knows his way around the state’s contradictions, from its wild borderlands to its craziest legislators. His Lone Star biography is important, timely, and most important, riveting.” —Boris Kachka, Vulture.com“An affecting memoir . . . Studded with . . . gems from the annals of Texas history.” —Steven G. Kellman, The Texas Observer“Takes readers on a trek through Texas from the dawn of the Republic to the 2016 election, and Texas space, from Houston to Marfa, Dallas to El Paso. Along the way, God Save Texas maps both the light and dark soul of the state . . . Organized by themes and geography, Wright drills deep into Texas politics, arts, culture, big cities, border, and energy. Wright’s often-humorous voice becomes a trusted guide when discovering Texas’s lost stories as well as confronting painful tragedies.” —Tarra Gaines, Arts and Culture Texas “The grand scale of Texas, and the sheer range of its places and people—Houston to El Paso, the Panhandle to the Valley—is inevitably compelling to any writer, and Wright is happy just trying to get his arms around it all.” —Michael King, Austin Chronicle“Masterful . . . An impressive ode to the Lone Star State . . . In a balanced tone, this narrative examines Texas’s historical, political, and social fabric that make the present tapestry, revealing a portrait of one of the most perplexing American states.” —Jacob Sherman, Library Journal (starred review)“This thoughtful, engrossing, and often-amusing survey is a kind of ‘waltz through Texas.’ . . . It is a state whose history, politics and culture Wright finds endearing, repelling, and puzzling, all dependent upon which aspect he is exploring and describing . . . An important book about a state and people who will continue to have a large impact on the U.S.” —Jay Freeman, Booklist (starred review) “An unflinching look at Texas—the state where Wright has spent most of his life—in all its grandeur and contradictions. . . . Wright’s large-scale portrait, which reveals how Texas is only growing in influence, is comprehensive, insightful, and compulsively entertaining.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“One of the state’s most renowned writers takes readers deep into the heart of Texas. As a staffer for The New Yorker and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Wright has illuminated a variety of intriguing subcultures. His native Texas is as exotic as any of them. He approaches his subject on a number of levels: as a stereotype, a movie myth, a cultural melting pot, a borderland, a harbinger of what is to come in an increasingly polarized and conservative country, and as a crucible that has shaped the character of a young writer who couldn't wait to escape but was drawn back . . . A revelation.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

A friend from another country once asked me why Texans are so proud of their state.Other than my dad’s attempt to move us to Florida when I was four (we moved back to Texas in eight months), and my year of teaching in Oklahoma, I’ve lived in Texas my whole life. My roots are deep here--there are two streets in Fort Worth named after my great-grandfather, whose father farmed the banks of the Trinity River. I’ve lived in East Texas, South Texas, North Texas, West Texas and the panhandle. I’m thoroughly Texan. In college, I was on the rodeo team—the Tarleton Texans. I mix Spanish with English, wear boots without irony, and know the price of cotton and cattle. I even--I hate to admit--have an armadillo tattoo (the official small mammal of Texas), a remnant of my Tarleton Texan days. Still, the question above is a tough one.In his book, “God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State,” Lawrence Wright attempts to answer that question and others.I read this book with more interest than I have any other in a long while. That’s partly because the material is familiar to me—the author writes about places I’ve visited, lived, and loved. But it’s also because of the author’s style. He is a remarkable writer who can really spin a yarn (Texan for “tell a story”) with vivid detail and subtle humor. One of Wright’s main subjects is the political culture of Texas, how it began, how it evolved, and why it matters, not just to Texas, but to the whole country. In short:“The political story in Texas both reflects and influences the national scene.”Wright misrepresents nothing; Texas is exactly as he describes it. And he has the necessary background to get it right—he was born and raised in Texas and knows many of his subjects personally—George and Laura Bush among many others. In the early part of the book, Wright describes three levels of culture: level one—the most basic and authentic level. The early German settlers in the Texas hill country built their homes from limestone because limestone is what was available. Level two culture is the least authentic, when a place adopts a foreign culture to become more sophisticated. Northeastern high rises in Austin, Texas, for instance. And level three—an informed return to the original culture: “Returning to one’s roots with knowledge, self-confidence, and occasionally, forgiveness…Level Three requires shaking off the mythic illusions and telling new stories about who we really are.”These levels of culture are also stages that we pass through in life; maybe the author hints at that. His discussion of Level Three reflects his own position in writing this book. He isn’t blindly patriotic about his native state, but he’s not ashamed of it, either. Rather, he sees it accurately—the good and the bad, appreciates it for what it is, and helps readers do the same.

Lawrence Wright is a noted writer of non-fiction - his book, "The Looming Tower" was a Pulitzer Prize winner - and one work of fiction. As an almost life-long resident of Texas, his latest book, "God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State", is a journey through the history of the state as well as a bit of a journey through his life. He and his family have lived decades in Texas - mostly in Austin - and he's lived though some of the most important events since 1950. His book is like a road trip through Texas with his interesting narrative along the way.Wright's written a rather idiosyncratic view of Texas. Less a history than assorted chapters about what has made Texas, Texas, Wright's book talks about history, politics, society, and that spirit that leaves much of the rest of the United States saying, "huh", when we hear about something outlandish that makes the news. Wright attempts to explain the vagaries of the Texas political structure, which has flipped almost completely from Democratic to Republican in the past 30 years. He also writes about the music scene and Texans timeless endearment of firearms. His book is also a love letter to the city of Austin and it's "Keep Austin Weird" vibe. But in all his writing, I couldn't detect much, if any nastiness about his subject. That's not saying Lawrence Wright is not critical about his beloved state, but what is said critically is said with a love the reader can't miss. Sort of like a parent writing about a much-loved, if slightly exasperating, child. It took me a while to read "God Save Texas". I began it on Tuesday when it was released and just finished it. It was a book that I savored. It was like the fact that I have liked every Texan I've ever met in the flesh, as opposed to who - and what - I see in the news. It's not difficult to dislike Texas and its people if you don't know any Texans or you haven't read a book like Lawrence Wright's.

The only "soul" plumbed is revealed via an egocentric exercise by the author that thankfully begins to bubble to the surface only in the book's later stages. However, that is preceded by 250 pages decrying Texas' failure--with the exception of Austin, of course--to have morphed into California. One can visualize the author on his knees praying that Texas’ electoral votes will soon join California and New York in erecting an eternal barrier to any but Progressive candidates for national office. Lulling one into a false sense of the author's purpose, however, are the first 60-70 pages that offer cute vignettes describing Texas' origins and its heroes, but reader beware of the pitfalls to come.In one particularly pitiful chapter, the author describes the terrors of Hurricane Harvey, which he blames on global warming, which was, of course, the Republicans’ fault, but into which he declares himself forced to drive to work on a play that wasn’t going to open—for reasons obvious to everyone but him (aren’t Pulitzer Prize winners supposed to be smarter than that?).One might continue reading, as I did, hoping against hope for some semblance of sanity, or at least some recognition of reality. One can perceive humor, but it’s invariably unintended. In the final analysis, the last page arrives as an immense relief.

There are so many things in here that will blow your mind, make you think about your mind, and make you laugh soo hard. It was much like Bens other books, but much longer and even more full of hope and redefining..... life as we know it really! I encourage anyone who reads it to be prepared for some radical ideas, laughs, realizations, and... I suppose I could liken it to a flash of light, just a burst of refreshing optimism!!!! Always remember though that this hope is never found anywhere but in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and it requires a lot of surrender and trust. Also know that when the term religion is mentioned, it means the religion man has made with all our traditions and regulations. Gods religion is to take care of the fatherless and the widows, those without hope, bring them the hope of LIVING FOREVER WITH GOD!!!!!! The surrendering will be difficult, but it is THE best possible thing you could do for yourself and the world!WARNING: This book may cause the reader to want to start dancing and/or go do something out of the ordinary, go share this with someone else, transform the world, or I don't know, LOW KEY WORLD DOMINATION!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!All opinions are my own and now it's up to you to go taste and see what hope can look like. May this book lead you to the source of all things good, the Bible, the Word of God.

"Optimisfits: Igniting a Fierce Rebellion Against Hopelessness" is a must-have book for this generation.Ben argues that God is a nonconformist, adventurer living with wild abandon, childlike wonder and unapologetic optimism; and invites us to reflect this lifestyle as we are created and made in God's image and likeness. I intend to read "Optimisfits" over and over, again and again! It is so uplifting, encouraging, and empowering as it constantly reminds the reader that despite our circumstances, God is above it all -- He is faithful, He is good, and He has never let anyone down and He isn't going to start with me. Ben's style of writing and his sense of humor keeps you glued to the pages. His unique insights and understanding of God, history, and science, and how they are all inextricably intertwined is mind-blowing. Ben really gets you thinking about things and about the world from a different and fresh perspective.Optimisfits fight to see the beauty in all things, all around us, because in God we live, move, and have our being. He is over all, in all, and through all. We are kids of the King, chill with the Creator, and besties with the Almighty. If you want in, then "Optimisfits: Igniting a Fierce Rebellion Against Hopelessness" is a must-read.If it's time to stop looking at things as half full (optimistic) or half empty (pessimistic), and instead, look at things as overflowing/"my cup runs over" (OPTIMISFIT), then you gotta get this book! It’s time to join the Squad: Adventures with God and Adventures with Squad! It's time to kick Satan in the trachea and defeat depression. It's time to triumph over tribulations and rise victorious. The battle belongs to the Lord! And the battle is already won! Read all about it in "Optimisfits" and listen to Ben's sermons on podcasts, Youtube, or Hope Generation app!Ok, I gotta go buy some more copies to hand out to family and friends. Hope you decide to buy a copy, too! K bye!

Optimisfits is a fantastic piece of literature. This book not only encourages the reader to look beyond their personal struggles (like depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, even OCD) and exchange them for living abundantly through the life that Jesus Christ died to give those who believe in Him. Ben Courson brings 50 chapters of material to the ready reader, and brings his work with gusto, charm, and insight. I grew up in the church and saw a lot of people who were faking to be optimistic, and being fake-happy. Ben’s fresh perspective on the super religious people, and those who are walking around without genuine joy ignites the reader’s hope, and really brought me to a personal state of realizing that it’s okay that I don’t have everything all together. Just find the joy of being enjoyed by God.

Ben's Courson's new book "Optimisfits" is much like life itself - a swiftly moving river with all kinds of twists, turns, shallows, rapids, and thrilling waterfalls. Life's river speeds us on towards an unknown delta and beyond. Ben's book challenges us to hang on and enjoy the ride - with enthusiasm, expectation, hope, and love. Love of God, His creation, each other, and every experience we encounter. Even in the dark times, the lonely times, the heart-wrenching times, Ben shows us how to have hope and joy because we belong to the One eternally seated on His throne. And just around the next bend or over the next waterfall, God has unimaginable blessings waiting for us.Ben's writing style is quirky and unique. It speeds up, then slows down. It takes you to a high mountaintop panoramic view, then dives down to a more lengthy explanation of a specific concept or example. To be honest, it took about 10 chapters for me to jump on board with his thought process. And it took to the very end of the book for me to finally understand why the book is written the way it is. (I'm not going to explain further, because SPOILERS.)I knew nothing about Ben before reading "Optimisfits". I still don't know his life story. This is not a straightforward memoir, but snippets of his life experiences are sprinkled throughout. Just enough to want to sit down for an afternoon with him and have an engaging conversation about God, the Bible, life, and hope. Ben's intelligence, wit, and compassion are on full display in this fast compelling read. I ended the book with a smile on my face and hope in my heart. I hope that you will as well.

W.C. Handy: The Life and Times of the Man Who Made the Blues, by David Robertson

From Booklist

At the turn of the twentieth century, W. C. Handy (1873–1958) propelled the blues from regional obscurity, changing it into a vital tradition that fostered much of American popular music that followed. A native Alabaman, Handy moved to Memphis in 1905 after living in St. Louis and becoming a professional musician whose experience included playing in minstrel shows for racially mixed audiences. He became a prolific composer of songs, including “St. Louis Blues” and “Beale Street Blues,” and established Memphis as the blues’ capital and Beale Street as its main street. Handy’s accomplishments as singer, composer, band leader, and musician came together in his endeavors as he became more famous and influential. Rich and atmospheric, Robertson’s portrayal of Handy is also comprehensive and well referenced. It ought to be required reading for devotees of American music, though it might constitute heavy sledding for casual fans. Readers who persist will be rewarded with a rich basic history of the man and his music and the roots of much of the music we hear today. --Mike Tribby

David Robertson's book about W. C. Handy provides good insight into the history of the Handy linage, and the development of not only Mr. Handy the musician, but also the development of early blues (which were different than the blues many associate with the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, etc.). Many good accounts were presented that explained how Handy "discovered" this genre of music, and also how he - as a schooled musician - was able to notate, publish, and distribute the music. Also of interest was the information that described how important copyrights were (and still are!) to song writers and music publishers, Handy's partnership with Harry Pace, and Handy's move to New York City. The biography, to me, presented more information regarding the creative and business practices of Handy than his personal life. I retained some impressions of him as an optimistic person, but few accounts were shared about his family life or emotional experiences he may have had. For example, I expected more telling of how Handy and his family would react to his eye problems and eventual blindness, the loss of his first wife, or how his children fared. With that said, the book is titled ". . . the Man Who Made the Blues," so perhaps the focus was deliberately more about the making of this genre. All in all, Mr. Robertson’s book was well researched, and an enjoyable and informative read. It’s a good companion book to Handy’s autobiography, “The Father of the Blues.”

Unfortunately Robertson is an unreliable source of information. For instance he creatively claims in the main text that Handy heard the song "Hesitation Blues" in 1885. If for some reason you turn to the notes at the back you'll find him admitting that he claimed he heard it in 1885 in the main text because it's "likely" he did, which is a shell game already, but also, it's not likely he did: If you read a good book about the blues such as Peter Muir's _Long Lost Blues_ you'll find it suggested that that song dates to more than 20 years after 1885. Handy was inconsistent enough in his memory about which folk song he first heard where in his travels (travels back when he was still somewhat a self-admitted snob regarding folk music) that we don't need someone adding historical fiction on top of that. This book largely rehashes _Father Of The Blues_, with a resulting main text about 70 pages shorter, leaving out some very good stories. _Father of The Blues_, which Laverne Barber and Arna Bontemps helped Handy assemble, has problems of its own (it's not possible to end up in St. Louis in "'92" because you left Bessemer because of the Panic of '93) but it's much better than this book.

Excellent book, the true story of one of America's legends

In his new biography of the African American composer W.C. Handy (1873 -- 1958), David Robertson tells the story of how Handy discovered the force of the blues. Handy, then living in Clarksdale, Mississippi, described in his autobiography a musical epiphany he had in 1903 or 1904 at the railroad station in Tutwiler:"A lean, loose-jointed Negro had commenced plunking a guitar beside me while I slept. His clothes were rags; his feet peeked out of his shoes. His face had on it some of the sadness of the ages. As he played, he pressed a knife on the strings of a guitar in a manner popularized by Hawaiian guitarists who used steel bars.'Goin where the Southern cross the Dog'. The singer repeated the line three times, accompanying himself on the guitar with the weirdest music I ever heard." (Handy, quoted in Robertson, p. 95)From this time forward, Handy began to integrate the blues he heard into the performances by his band of marches, dances, and ragtimes. Handy ultimately was to describe himself as the "father of the blues." But more broadly, Handy became what he described as "an American composer." Educated and urbane, Handy knew that the classical composer Antonin Dvorak had visited the United States and developed the "Dvorak Manifesto." Dvorak predicted that the national music of the United States would ultimately be based upon spirituals and other music of African Americans. (Robertson, p. 9) Handy set out to prove Dvorak correct.Robertson has written a moving biography of Handy's life and accomplishments, placing his story in the context of the development of both popular and classical American music. Born in a log cabin in Florence, Alabama, Handy's father and grandfather had been ministers. To the chagrin of his father, Handy became acquainted with the legendary black musician Joe Turner. Handy bought a cornet, taught himself to play, and formed the ambition of living a life of music. As young men, Handy and four companions hoboed their way to the Chicago World's Fair only to find it had been postponed for a year. Handy then travelled alone to St Louis where he struggled with poverty and lived the life later immortalized in "St. Louis Blues."For many years, the young Handy led the life of a wanderer. Handy performed in minstrel shows, with their patronizing and stereotyped attitude towards blacks. He married, moved to Clarksdale, and then to Memphis. In both these southern cities, he was a band leader trying to make a living performing for both white and black audiences. The turning point in Handy's life came when he discovered the rural blues at the Tutwiler railroad station where he heard "the sadness of the ages."Handy's reputation rests upon a small number of blues songs he composed from about 1909-1920, including his most famous song "St Louis Blues". Composed in 1914, the song was little-noticed until 1920, but it has been recorded and performed innumerable times since then. With its haunting combination of blues and tango, "St. Louis Blues" has become one of the iconic works of American music. Handy's other compositions include the "Memphis Blues" (Handy foolishly sold the copyright to this work almost literally for a song -- $50), the "Beale StreetBlues", "Yellow Dog Blues" and "Aunt Hagar's Blues". These songs are worthy achievements for any composer. In the 1920s Handy moved to New York where he turned his attention from composition to writing. In 1926, he coauthored, together with the Wall Street Lawyer Jacob Niles and the Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias, a seminal work on the early blues titled, "The Blues: an Anthology." In 1941, Handy wrote his autobiography, "The Father of the Blues" detailing, among other things, the bawdy life on Beale Street, Memphis of his day. Late in the 1930s, Handy became interested in and edited an anthology of Spirituals. Blinded by a subway accident in 1943, Handy lived until 1958, when he died an American legend.Handy has been somewhat slighted in recent years in favor of the Delta Blues musicians such as Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson. But the blues had many roots. Handy knew Patton and rural blues. But Robertson shows that blues was also heavily influenced by ragtime. (The connection will be apparent to anyone who studies ragtime on the piano.) A trained musician, Handy incorporated many strains into his blues. Handy's blues were in their turn incorporated into both American jazz and classical music, particularly George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."Robertson tells the story of Handy's musical, personal, and business life with eclat. He portrays the development of Handy's music through the ministrel shows, band and march music, ragtime, blues, and tin pan alley. He also offers a rare look into the publishing world, as Handy, in spite of his lack of business sense, became a successful African American entrepeneur and music publisher with his friend Harry Pace and then with his brother, Charles Handy.Robertson's study confirms Handy's importance to American music and offers a great deal of insight into the development of the blues. Readers with an interest in the blues and in American music will benefit from this book.Robin Friedman
