Review

"The most entertaining book on football this decade." —Allen Barra, The Dallas Morning News"A thrill-a-minute book...Along with his protégé Mike Leach, now the head coach at Washington State University, Mr. Mumme revolutionized their sport in ways that, frankly, dwarf the legacy of Billy Beane and his gang from 'Moneyball.'"  —The Wall Street Journal“Excellent sports history . . . an inspiring reminder that great ideas don't automatically permeate the existing ideology. Sometimes a devoted few must pursue their principles with diligence, even if they don't get the glory.” —Publishers Weekly“It is undeniable that the Air Raid, the fast passing game, and the frequency of the forward pass are now imprinted on football, especially, as Gwynne notes, on the college level though also in the NFL. That makes his subtitle all the more fitting, for undeniably, the two coaches changed the game—and brought glory to their institutions. A superb treat for all gridiron fans.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"A rousing tale of innovation finding success in the face of the gale-force winds of convention." —Booklist"The Perfect Pass is a perfect book about football—and the transformative power of innovation. S.C. Gwynne brings the same remarkable reporting and storytelling skills he used in Empire of the Summer Moon and Rebel Yell to reveal the dramatic history behind the passing revolution that disrupted and forever changed America’s favorite sport. His portrait of Hal Mumme, the unknown underdog coach who unleashed the Air Raid offense on the modern game, is superb, at once capturing the passion and genius that made him an unsung hero of his generation." —Brian D. Sweany, editor in chief, Texas Monthly"When we played against a Hal Mumme offense, our defense had to be changed dramatically. You had to throw away everything you knew or you were going to get beat. Every offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator in football better study this book to find out why." —Jerry Glanville, former NFL and college head coach“Being a football coach who innovates against the way the game has long been played is deeply challenging. S.C. Gwynne captures perfectly how Hal Mumme's Air Raid offense helped change the landscape of college football forever. It's a great story.” —Bruce Arians, head coach, Arizona Cardinals"Hal Mumme has always been a true American genius, and every year teams running his offense are among the tops in yards and points. I know, because I would've liked to have hired him. He has a brilliant football mind, and here at last is his amazing story, told in full." —Bob Stoops, head coach, University of Oklahoma"If you are a coach, a manager, an entrepreneur, an executive, an MBA student, etc. looking for a real life example of thinking way outside the box and changing your industry or field completely, then The Perfect Pass is the book for you.  Read it, digest it, and then apply it to your life’s work." —Texas History Page

For kids growing up today, football's pass-happy offenses are natural and expected. That hasn't always been the case. As S.C. Gwynne chronicles in The Perfect Pass: American Genius and the Reinvention of Football, the passing game has evolved through a variety of streams, but one man is chiefly responsible for shaping the passing game as it is played today: Hal Mumme. Called by some the most influential football coach of the modern era, Mumme is not remembered for championships but for the way he re-envisioned the game and has influenced a generation of coaches and players. From the start, passing was considered a sissy option in a hard-hitting game. Even as Mumme expanded his game plans to a pass-first offense, he met resistance. Coaches were slow to pick up his ideas. He put on coaching clinics where no one showed up, or if they showed up they walked out early. Eventually his genius was recognized, as he transformed small, previously noncompetitive football programs into record-breaking passing machines.Gwynne's account is a delightful stroll through recent football history. Although he sees Mumme as a distinctive genius, he does place Mumme in appropriate context, describing Mumme's use of ideas from BYU's passing attack (especially when he beat BYU as a major underdog, using their own plays against them!), the West Coast offense, and other approaches, shaping those ideas into his own Air Raid offense. Gwynne makes a strong case that the passing game we see today, especially in the Big 12, but really across college and pro football, owes its nature to Mumme's Air Raid.Mumme had moments in the limelight, but for the most part is an unknown figure to many football fans. (Today he's coaching at Bellhaven University, which plays in the NAIA.) But fans who love where the game has come, with an emphasis on passing and spreading the field, should take a break between games to read The Perfect Pass and pay homage to one of the true geniuses of the game. The Perfect Pass is essential reading for football history aficionados. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

It may as well have been called "portrait of the artist as a young coach," because that's what Hal Mumme is: an artist whose medium is football. His likes to win, but more than winning, he is a man who once had a vision of football transforming football from a brutal scrum and into a passionate display of arial perfection and commitment and, after years of toil and study, he achieved his vision. Along the way he and his teams bucked orthodoxies at every turn, sometimes apparently just for the sake of being different, and also broke nearly every passing record possible, and revolutionized the game even while he was exiled from the big time himself.More than just the story of Mumme, though, Gwynne delves deep into the history of the forward pass in football, from its legalization (and disdain) in the early 20th century and its evolution through famous figures like Bill Walsh, LaVell Edwards, and Mouse Davis to more obscure names like Jack Neumeier, Red Faught, and Dutch Meyer. He traces the evolution and slow uptick in passing throughout the decades, even as the pioneers who aired it faced constant skepticism from purists who thought their approach wasn't merely unsound strategy, but also faintly immoral. We see the young Mumme giving up a lucrative sales job as a young man to embark on his personal odyssey in coaching, paying his dues through a string of hard-won but precarious jobs that paid next to nothing, as he met and studied the works of those masters who'd came before. All of it to pursue a vision that began as both a passion and a vague notion: to throw the football and throw it more often and better than anyone had ever done before. This book tells the story of Mumme toiling in obscurity, constantly studying and criss-crossing the country to learn and refine his system, putting in the time in the woodshed like all great artists do.This is a good read for anyone interested in studying the history of the passing game. Gwynne's style is crisp and a fun read, but don't expect a lot of memorable turns of phrase here. Some of the history that Gwynne cites in regards to Mumme also seems to be fudged a bit, and with little knowledge of his subject before he began writing this book, Gwynne seems to heap a bit too much praise and credit onto Mumme, delving into constant hyperbole while glossing over the man's faults and failings (which would make him a more interesting subject of a biography) and ending, oddly, on Mumme's high point as a coach: his first Kentucky team's 1997 upset of Alabama (which was in the middle of one of its worst seasons in years, it turns out, but Gwynne doesn't tell you that, either) that came in the midst of a 5-7 season. That's odd because the next 19 years of Mumme's career, which was a spectacular fall from grade that is probably a compelling book in its own right, gets glossed over in a brief epilogue at the end, such as when he says that Kentucky team in 2001 had lost a lot of talent the year before (justifying the 2-9 record), but he fails to mention that Mumme brought much of that on himself by running off players and, inexplicably, benching his returning All SEC QB Dustin Bonner in favor of 300lb freshman interception machine Jared Lorenzen. Hal Mumme is a brilliant, fascinating, transformative figure in football history whose career has been tragically defined by his own hubris and apparent inability to get out of his own way, but Gwynne doesn't even touch upon that angle here, leaving this book a shell of what it could have been.Gwynne also fails to delve into the reasons why the Air Raid offense, which has traditionally had a pretty mediocre record in terms of winning percentage, continued to spread and grow ever more popular even as Mumme's star fell further and further. The lack of any mention of Tony Franklin, an assistant coach who was a big part of Mumme's downfall at Kentucky and later popularized the offense by packaging and selling it to high school and college coaches eager to learn "the system" also seems like a glaring omission.Still, if you want to learn how the passing game evolved into the wide open offenses we see everywhere today or come to a better understanding of how art and football intersect, you will definitely want to read this book.

Great book. Although i do not agree with all of Gwynne's observations on why the passing game has had such a difficult time in becoming the dominating offensive concept in football, his facts are great. He explains quickly and simply the transformation of offensive thought. He includes some folks that usually get left out like "Dutch Meyer." Hal Mumme was and is a difference maker. His story so remarkable and the sacrifices he made to develop it were so significant, that they need to be told. Gwynne has done it. As a veteran Texas High School coach and a friend of Hal Mumme and several of the characters in the book I say "well done and thanks."

I give out very few 5 stars to books, but that's what I'm giving here. This was simply a great read. If you're old enough to have followed football for a few decades, you know the passing game has somehow grown from an afterthought to the dominant mode of play, making football more exciting than ever (and if you don't believe me about the exciting part, just watch some 1960s college game on ESPN Classic and prepare for a nice snooze). I recall in the 1990s arguing that the passing game was really taking off and a friend actually argued against me. Well I was right but I wish I had known then all the details I know now, having read this book. It tells a lot of the story about how that happened and the personalities driving the change. And it might just make you want to run to the nearest Division III stadium to see what's up at the scrappiest level of play.

Review

"At last, the Eastern Caribbean has the dive guide it deserves. " Volume I covers the Caribbean Islands from Dominica to Tobago. The first book of its kind for the area, The Complete Diving Guide - The Caribbean Volume 1 by Colleen Ryan and Brian Savage is meticulously researched and packed with useful information. The book describes over 240 dive sites and covers 50 extensively, and includes full-color underwater site plans. All in all, the guide contains everything a diver needs to know to decide which island to dive and where to stay, which operators to dive with, which sites to visit, what to expect to see and even which camera lenses to use to capture on film what you actually see. " -- PADI Undersea Journal - First Quarter 1998"The Complete Diving Guide - The Caribbean (Volume 1) is exactly what it professes to be. Intended to be the first in a series, it looks at the southern islands of the Eastern Caribbean. Each chapter starts with a short island introduction followed by a very specific description of the dive sites, operators and hotels. The write-ups of the dive sites are full of interesting personal experiences. The rest of the chapter provides just the sort of information you need, such as which operators have english speaking dive guides and which recognise the depth limitations of BSAC rather than PADI. Throughout the book's 390 information-packed pages are numerous interesting side panels. One describes the ships that sank in St. Pierre Harbour on Martinique when Mount Pelee erupted in 1902. The resulting dive sites sound so fascinating that I at once booked a trip to the island. Surely this is the acid test of a dive guide?" -- Diver Magazine, October 1998, Brendan O'Brien"This book on the area is a must for visitors and tour group leaders" -- PADI Undersea Journal - Second Quarter 1998"Three years ago Colleen Ryan and Brian Savage traded in their highly successful London careers for a life cruising the Caribbean on their yacht. And being keen divers they needed a guide to the area. Dissatisfied with what they found they decided to write and publish their own. It took two years' hard work, the mastering of a whole new set of skills from marine biology to desktop publishing and some dogged determination. The result is the most accurate, useful and interesting guide to Caribbean diving yet published. The first volume covers the southern part of the Caribbean from Dominica to Tobago, but does not stretch to Bonaire and Curacao. More than 240 dives are described with detailed graphics for 50 sites and most usefully all the dive operators are listed and evaluated. The book looks as if it has been produced by a slick publishing house with all the resources in the world. It is hard to believe it was compiled by two amateurs in the saloon of their yacht moored off out-of-the-way Caribbean islands. A remarkable achievement and essential reading for anyone planning a diving trip to the area. The only problem is that you will end up wanting to sell up, buy a boat and spend the next several years checking out the dives in detail." -- Dive International, March 1998, Max JamesFrom an article on diving in the Windward islands: "This book on the area is a must for visitors and tour group leaders" -- PADI Undersea Journal, Second Quarter 1998The Complete Diving Guide - The Caribbean (Volume 1) is exactly what it professes to be. From the Author

We are PADI dive instructors and combine our love of diving with sailing aboard our yacht Theta Volantis. We arrived in the Caribbean in 1994 anticipating a few years of sailing and diving the Eastern Caribbean Islands. We soon found that there were no detailed diving guides that would enable us to decide where we would find the type of diving we enjoy. We wanted to know which islands had good visibility and sheltered sites suitable for underwater photography; which had the steep walls and fast drifts that would give us exciting diving; which had good wrecks; which islands should we take our novice friends to; and where would we find sites we could dive independently from our yacht? Because we were able to sail from island to island on our yacht we were fortunate to be able to sample the diving everywhere. But we realised that someone planning a vacation would not have that opportunity and by then we had discovered how different the diving was on each of the islands and what a wide range of quality of service was offered by the dive operators. So, in the absence of a truly comprehensive and objective guide, we decided to write one. The Complete Diving Guide Series is the result of 5 years researching the diving in the Eastern Caribbean. We spent months on each island instead of the normal one or two week vacation that most people have, so we were able to study the diving and the operators in depth. We did some great diving and gained a real insight into the diving business in this region. In the course of our research we met many diving vacationers and often, in the absence of good information, they had not made the best choice of island (or even the best location on that island) for their particular diving needs. We have written the type of diving guide we wanted to be able buy and we hope that our readers can make better informed decisions about their choice of diving vacation in the Eastern Caribbean.

A great text !

Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.

We dive regularly in these areas covered by the Complete Dive Guide Vol 1, a place where information is scarce except for that offered by local operators. We found this guide, especially the Dive Maps and the information on the local Dive shops and their services to be the ABSOLUTE Best available. We recommend everyone who dives these areas grab a copy and keep it close. This guide has given us the ability to dive confidently and know we aren't going to miss anything the area has to offer. Thanks Brian & Colleen

A very good book. Picked it up to check it out and was impressed at how comprehensive it is in regards to specific dives spots and charter outfits. I thought it was so useful that I am trying to find Volume 2.

July 2001 I dove several of the sites reviewed by ms Ryan and Mr Savageand found their profiles of the dives to be very accurate andhelpful.I hope she and Brian Savage will do a "completeDG of the Bahamas,I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Had to get this play for school. It was interesting

This is a beautifully written play. And wonderful to read. The fact that I saw Stockard Channing in the original and can hear her as I read it, probably helps.

While I never get as much reward from reading a play as a novel, I did find the message awesome, John Guare makes us THINK, and that's important.

I forgot to write this review, but this is an amazing play. I read it and re-read it after I received it. This copy seemed as if if came straight from the printer, thats how new it was

Excellent play, but disturbing. More appropriate as a text for college than high school where I encountered it being taught to a student I was tutoring.

This play is quick moving and a riot. I loved every minute of this. I found it easy to read and I didn't get bored and need breaks like I typically do when I am reading. The characters are fun and the whole idea behind the story is fun.

Worked great. Especially helpful

was good

Primary Colors: A Novel of Politics

Amazon.com Review

The famous -- or infamous -- roman a clef about the 1992 Clinton presidential campaign. You've read the hype; now read the book. Primary Colors has its rich rewards as a savvy insider's look at life on the stump. But it travels far beyond mere gossip and expose and discovers a convincing world of its own, peopled by smart cookies, nutcases, and wheeler-dealers, whose public and private lives illuminate each other -- sometimes by casting dark shadows. This story spans the novelistic spectrum from bedroom farce to high moral drama, and it paints a picture of the political state of the nation so vivid and authentic that one finds in it the deepest kind of truth -- the kind of truth that only fiction can tell.

From Publishers Weekly

The circumstances behind this crackling, highly perceptive study of a presidential campaign that remarkably resembles Bill Clinton's are bizarre. We are assured that not even its publisher, Harold Evans, who signed the book, or its editor knows the identity of the author. A third party, independent of both the publisher and the author's agent, verified his (or her) credentials and oversaw the contract signing. All this has naturally led to the assumption that the author may be someone highly placed in Washington, possibly even within the Clinton Administration; the intimate knowledge of Washington folkways the narrative exhibits seems to bear that out. On the other hand, the literary sophistication on display-the shaping of the story, the characterizations, the atmosphere, the dialogue-is so considerable it seems a professional writer must be at work. But while the mystery may help galvanize sales, it does not affect the quality of the book, which stands as a definitive political novel for these uneasy times-a novel that's knowing about the easy abuse of sincerity, the overblown role of the media (all reporters are "scorps," short for scorpions), the readiness to confuse means with ends. Henry Burton, the narrator, is a bright, youngish black man who rises quickly to a key position on the presidential primary campaign staff of Jack Stanton, governor of a small Southern state. Stanton is a brilliant portrait of a born politician, a man at once deeply calculating and genuinely spontaneous in his human reactions; his wife, Susan, a smart lawyer, despises his louche sexual adventuring but is driven by her own demons. Around them revolves a superbly observed staff, a mixture of deep cynicism, muddled idealism and, in the person of Libby, a ghost from Stanton's past who is at once explosively funny and tragic, a compulsive seeker of the truth. Stanton's fortunes fluctuate wildly in the campaign as he slogs through New Hampshire, endures a drubbing in New York (where a governor not unlike Mario Cuomo decided not to run) and seems to cause a heart attack in a buttoned-down rival in Florida. This inspires the entry of a mystery candidate with a magic touch, who turns out, in one of the novel's few overplotted passages, to have his own complex problems; the resolution, however, strikes just the right uneasily ambiguous note. Throughout the book, the attention to physical and emotional detail in the draining political process, the sparkling intelligence and-through the use of Henry as hero-the unusual empathy with which a range of African Americans are portrayed suggest a very considerable new novelist. I finally picked up this book during the Clinton/Trump presidential campaign because I'd been obsessing over political news and figured I might as well add some more fiction to the mix. I enjoyed the book quite a bit although, of course, it was difficult not to hear Jack Stanton in a particular voice. What resonated with me the most, though, were the author's words about the political press. Particularly this year, with reporters opining on how perhaps they shouldn't give so much free coverage to Trump, then "ZOMG! Look what he just said!" Not to mention. "Look! More Benhazi!"

Reading Primary Colors, a "novel" about a cerain Southern state governor who is handsome and charismatic with a wandering eye for the ladies, and running for the presidency, is almost like an alternative universe version of re-living Bill Clinton's successful run in 1991. It's almost Clinton, but not quite, just enough different to perhaps avoid any possible legal entanglements. But the aw-shucks, grinning, candidate who has such a powerful and personal contact with people, his brainy and steel-willed wife (Hilary's clone?) are penatrating portraits of fictional people who bare a startling resemblence to Bill and Hilary. Did our governor have an affair with this woman, and get this black girl pregnant? You'll have to read this witty and literate version of what may or may not have transpired during the governor's run for the presidency. It's a fun, light-hearted read that still conveys a lot about the govrenor's ethics, morals and vision for America. Very recommended for people who enjoy reading about politicans and the often nasty and always intriguing business of politics.

Loved the movie and have been meaning to read this book for years. This didn’t disappoint. The movie followed the book very closely so it was like visiting an old friend in person and getting the fleshed-out details

Don't buy it now. Big hit when it came out in 1996. People were sure it was about the Clintons. Otherwise it's boring as heck, like swimming in molasses, unless you want to hear EVERYTHING about a campaign.

Was a very funny novel when it was released. Now, in 2016, I find it rather chilling. Movie version is excellent too (which you cannot say about many movies based on books, sadly), with dead-on casting.

During this tumultuous election season, it's a lot of fun to look back at another Clinton's fight for thr White House, even though, of course, it's a fictional account. Since it was written by an insider, it gives the reader an insight. And it's well-written.

Audacious at the time and still packs a punch but post 2016 US election the world of politics is a lot different. Although fictional it is an insiders account. A standard for the art of politics as practitioner or observer.

.I thought this book was a splendid read. Quite the entertaining pieces. Makes one think. Though there were many characters, I didn't get lost. You'd have to expect that may characters in a book, as such.I think the reader gives a, Unique, view of the eternal life in politics. And the world of the spin doctor is more understandable to everyone. The reader can understand, better, many of the things seen in tv of the political nature, and understand why people volunteer to work as staffers, why some people have a gift, why a person when choose to vote for can seem so powerful, yet relies on a team of people. You can really see a lot, within this book.

I own a number of Edition Reuss books, and they are all huge, heavy, beautifully bound volumes for the true bibliophile, and this one is no exception. What makes this one different from all the rest is that it features the work and life of just one traditional Japanese tattoo artist---Horikazu. The photography is, as usual, just fantastic... Almost 500 pages of photos showing the artist, his studio, his family, and most of all, all the complete body suits of his clients---it is never mentioned, but all are obviously Yakuza---the Japanese mafia. Lots of group shots, posed and candid, of the master and his blood family and the "family" of his human canvases. There is a good deal of text---interviews with Horikazu and his son who took over the business after his death...and very informative writing about the underground world of old school Japanese tattoo. Also included are fascinating historical photos and a large number of his preliminary drawings, all with explanations of Japanese legends. All of the text is in English, German, and French. Even though I own many books on the subject, there was still much to be learned from this volume---highly, highly recommended.

This was an awesome book. high quality pictures, great story if one of Tokyo's great Horis. I gave it as a gift, and almost really kept it for myself. It was an amazing book, full of great quality highly detailed pictures.

This book is AMAZING. It is great quality, heavy and beautiful inside and out. - the perfect coffee table book. It was a gift for my completely tattooed friend and he love it.

5/5

The book met my explenations.
