Weeds of the Northeast

Review

"I highly recommend Weeds of the Northeast if you ever happen to be in a masochistic mood and don't have a sharp stick handy with which to poke yourself in the eye. As I leafed through the pages, wincing at the depressingly clear color photographs, a horrible sense of familiarity set in. Ninety-nine percent of the weeds were in my garden. It was like looking at a family album of all your least favorite relatives. There was mean and scary Great-Aunt Margaret (Scotch thistle); passive-aggressive Cousin Isobel with the mustache (hairy bittercress); Uncle Ralph with the drinking problem and disgusting table manners (prostrate pigweed). Despite the feeling of nausea that gripped me, I was able to gather much useful information of a scientific sort. As Nietzsche said, that which doesn't kill me makes me stronger, and so I suppose my encounter with an army of unnaturally über-weeds could be looked at as an exercise in character-building."―Horticulture, Jan/Feb 2005"This impressive factual Weed Identification Manual, the first ever compiled of the Northeast, is thorough and well designed. . . . This is a distinctive book and reference guide on weeds, one that will be welcomed in a library, school, garden club, a gift for friends, and definitely a copy for yourself."―News of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State"This detailed and user-friendly guide identifies nearly 300 weedy plant species commonly found from southeastern Canada south to Virginia and west to Wisconsin. Sharp color photographs illustrate each plant in seed, seedling, and mature stages. In addition, plants can be readily distinguished using an identification key based on vegetative characteristics such as leaf orientation, leaf shape, and presence or absence of hairs. A handy fold-out chart helps with identification of those tricky grasses. Weeds that can be identified easily by characteristics such as thorns or milky sap are listed in a series of 'shortcut' tables."―The American Gardener"The appeal of Weeds of the Northeast is broad, ranging from home gardeners to professional gold course managers to farmers. The book deserves a slot in the reference library."―American Reference Books Annual"Weeds of the Northeast is the first comprehensive weed identification manual available for the northeastern region of the U.S. . . . The manual will facilitate appropriate weed management strategies in horticultural or agronomic cropping systems and will also serve home gardeners, landscape managers, pest management specialists, and allergist."―Weed Technology"Lavishly illustrated and exceptionally well-done. . . . Here is a model to be emulated for California and other weedy areas of the United States and Canada."―Taxon 47"This is a thorough and well-designed book that's been needed for a long time. The system of having both drawings and photographs accompanying the description of each plant will be of great help to amateur gardeners as well as to professional growers and horticulturists. The identification tables are also very useful."―Elisabeth Sheldon, author of A Proper Garden: On Perennials in the Border"Knowing your opponents is the first step in weed prevention. Weeds of the Northeast is businesslike and well photographed―a useful tool for the conscientious gardener."―Barbara Damrosch, author of The Garden Primer

I just bought a house and have been carving out gardens. I've planted a few hundred plants over the last year. Unfortunately, I cant always remember, what the leaves of the plants I've planted look like. This book has been a god send to identify if the plant is a weed or something I put in the ground. Lots of pictures, and good info to identify weeds. Like smell, flowers, seed pods etc. Highly recommended for any gardener in the Northeast. Especially, forgetful ones, like me!

I purchased this for my husband who is a dairy farmer and the book was recommended to him for weed identification and prevention purposes in our hay and cornfields. Apparently the local cooperative extension and many others in the industry call it their number one book to go to when needing to identify a weed. I looked it over before I gave it to him and it was very comprehensive. Additionally the pictures are very good.

This book seems like a good idea but it's exceedingly hard to use. Full of expert knowledge, but really written for experts, not amateur gardeners. It doesn't help that the subject matter is incredibly dense, since the varieties of plants is huge even within a limited region, but we could not even find weeds that we had already identified. Many common weeds seem to be missing. Not nearly enough photos, and many of them poor. Just altogether too much of an academic exercise for most home use, I'm afraid.

I've tried several books on wild edibles because I want to make use of plants (weeds) growing on my property. This book solved my problem. Although it isn't geared to identification of edible plants only, nor does it make any claim about uses for various plants, I was finally able to identify all the common weeds I'd been wondering about. Once I knew what a plant was, I could go to another book ('Peterson Field Guide: Edible Wild Plants' is my favorite) to learn about potential usability.I've really tried hard to identify these plants with surety in other books without success, but with this one, I was able to identify them all in about 30 minutes. Every one of the 299 common weeds described in this book has a full page of great pictures as well as a page of information. The thorough and unusual indexes in the front help you find plants by characteristics, but for me it was the pictures that did the trick. There's a picture of the mature plant in its favored location as well as pictures of seedlings, seeds, close-ups, stem characteristics, and sometimes a person's hand holding the plant, which helps with size reference on small plants and even additional drawings where they would add value. There is a thorough glossary at the end of the book, tables of comparisons, and charts including an elaborate foldout chart comparing various grasses. At some point, I may want to get deeper into the provided information to help control certain weeds, but my main goal was identification and this book did it for me--in spades. I couldn't be more pleased.

Cool book if you're into the strongest survivors in the plant world. I read this while working in Sterling Forest, NY, where we frequently found ourselves outside, waiting for the truck to arrive. My co-workers kept asking me, why didn't you buy a book about trees, shrubs, flowers, herbs, even mushrooms? Why weeds?! My response was always, humans are the ultimate weed. Understanding weeds, I come to a deeper understanding of humans. This tended to shut them up. The weed identification details in this book are top-notch, and the photos are crisp and clear. I was able to identify nearly every so-called weed on my property, and keep the ones that were harmless or beneficial, while manually removing the ones that were likely to run amok or suffocate my newly-planted shrubs and trees.

I absolutely love this book. We have a summer home, so I only get back to my flower gardens a few times between June-October. I have to make the most of every precious "weeding moment". Instead of digging, pulling, Round-upping, or Preening indiscriminately, I can now treat my 101 varieties of weeds in the most effective manner, or just ignore them in some cases. Color photos show every weed in all stages of development and has information on how and when they propagate, so you can time and prioritize your weeding attacks. I didn't give the book 5 stars because it had photos of some, but not all root systems. Also, it had little information on how to control weeds. For instance, the authors explain the life cycle of yellow nutsedge and how a new plant grows from a tuber, but they could have mentioned that you should uproot each new plant BEFORE it develops 6 leaves and sets its own tubers. I found this information online. I will have to make my own notes on control in the page margins.

In dirt things grow, and this book can help you easily identify them! Most weeds have at least one page of information, plants are divided by vegetation similarities. In the front there are nifty identification tables to help you find the plant that you are identifing. In the back there are super-nifty tables comparing similar plants. It is easy to read and well put together - in conjunction with The Book of Field and Roadside: Open-Country Weeds, Trees, and Wildflowers of Eastern North America which gives a deeper insight to many common plants in the North East and Grasses: An Identification Guide (Sponsored by the Roger Tory Peterson Institute) a terrific grass identification book which is concise; I feel ready to identify everything I meander across!

This book has complete descriptions plus photos of the leaves, entire plant, flowers and seeds making it very easy to find a certain weed/plant. Since it contains many different weeds, more than the usual ones, identification of plants is easier and more certain than with just 1 picture or drawing that most books show. Also shown are seedling and early growth photos, showing the difference between the small plant and how it looks when in full flower which may be much taller. Seeds of each are shown, frequently contrasted with seeds of similar species. This book by Cornell University Press is the best one to ID any weed from the East Coast.

So here is this lovely woman whom you'd think had it all. But her life isn't really so unusual except for the men to whom she was married. Many of us had tragic childhoods. Hers was lonely (except she has great siblings when she gets to see them) and her parents basically abandoned her. Okay, so get therapy as have the rest of us. I'm not saying I have no pity, but she comes across as very "Me Me Me" and since the book is about her, I suppose that's her right. What I do respect is that it seems she eventually, more or less, learned the lessons of codependency and did something about it. I'm really glad Eric Clapton got sober. I'd like to read his biography and see where he's coming from. Will always love George Harrison and it really is a shame the 60s set up so many marriages for failure with the culture of "you can have it all" drugs and sex. Which we've now learned through our/my parents isn't all it's cracked up to be. Pattie is my mother's age, so I see her much as I see my own mother. I guess other than that, I'm terribly sorry she never was able to have children. She's probably a super great Auntie though! I bet she's a lot of fun to be around and I'd love to visit her garden. I like her better as she ages and matures. Then again, same could be said for self. And there it is. I liked the book all 'round and would say it's worth a read if you're a fan of the gents in question or the era. Would have liked to have seen more modeling pics, but I always like art. I bet her early London outfits were lots of fun!

Well worth the read if you ever loved the music of Eric Clapton and/or George Harrison. Ms. Boyd handles the story that you probably already know, quite well. She spends a lot of time talking about their music, and treats Clapton and Harrison with a lot of dignity. It wasn't gossipy. The story I knew was gossipy. She doesn't take that route at all.

Wow! So many of us girls would have wished ourselves to be Pattie Boyd back then. I mean how lucky could you get to have one of the Beatles fall in love with you and want to marry you? Or had two famous men write such beautiful songs that were specifically about them? Pattie was obviously a very beautiful and SPECIAL woman. But she ended up being just like so many other women of much less fame. Beauty alone is not going to keep your man true to you or home with you when you need him the most. After they sow their "Wild Oats', many men start realizing that they want to have children and leave an imprint of themselves and their lineage behind them before they die. Sadly, I think that is how Pattie ended up losing both George and Eric. I think both realized that they wanted to be fathers, and Pattie could not (for whatever reason) provide either husband with the one thing that may have been the glue that bonded them together and prevented outcomes that were (in my opinion) tumultuous and forever life-altering.

It's taken me a while to write this review. I used to kid that in "my next life" I wanted to be Patty Boyd. How incredible to be loved by both George Harrison and Eric Clapton, two of my very favorite rock musicians! But the book left me feeling sorry for Patty, she seems to have led such a very superficial and exploited life. Much of the book is about drugs and alcohol abuse, and (escapist?) travels to far away and exotic places. I also had all my misperceptions about Eric Clapton blown; what a boar! I wish for Patty's sake that she could have worked things out with George Harrison; I believe they really loved each other. But George went on to find a new love, and have a son, so I guess things worked out for him the way they were supposed too. The latter part of the book talks a lot about Patty's money problems; but she still seems to travel and travel! Her life experiences and perceptions of the value of money are so different from the average persons! One other note. I bought this book for $1.99 a couple of months ago. Apparently, more people are still reading it, as the price has gone up. Don't know if I would have been satisfied if I'd paid a higher price, but I'm glad I bought and read the book.

I found everything post childhood interesting...kind of a sad childhood with no real paternal guidance and little love, it seems, but I just wanted to get through it and on the George and the Beatles. I enjoyed those parts and then on to Eric Clapton, but you can't help but notice she was such a "follower". What they wanted to do, she did. No independence and while she was part of the hippy era, she takes no position or even mentions the women's liberation movement. Her life was pretty much a party because the friends she had pretty much lived that life as well. She discusses alcoholism issues regarding Clapton, her sister, and others, but never admits she had a problem, because it quickly becomes apparent that she did, too. She writes often of having too much to drink, drinking in the morning with Clapton, automobile accidents involving alcohol, but never confesses that she herself had a problem. Throughout this life, she made lots and lots of bad decisions, one after the other.

I couldn’t even finish this book because it was sooooo boring. And the name dropping was constant. Who cares who so and so was who lived across the street, or sitting at the bar, etc., etc., she names practically everyone she passes on the street. And any information about George Harrison or the Beatles was lifted straight out of Teen magazine. Nothing new or interesting in this book. Total disappointment. Don’t waste your time.

Great read!My only complaint from the get-go is her braggadocious writing style, though she has a lot to tell. There were times where I just skipped a few sentences because the name dropping served as fluff and could at times be difficult to keep up with. Although, I don't often read autobiographies so I may have just been expecting each "character" to contribute more to the scene. After getting used to that, the stories were addicting and gut wrenching. I'll never listen to "Wonderful Tonight" the same again.Definitely recommend this read for anyone that loves The Beatles, Eric Clapton, or just this time in Rock & Roll/pop culture/ history in general.

Despite its title being "The Dark Net", don't expect this book to be entirely, or even mostly, about the "darknet", "dark internet", "deep web" or "deepnet". Three of those terms have subtly differing meanings. Websites accessible only with special software, such as the Tor browser (aka the "deep web" or "deepnet"), feature prominently only in one chapter, which focuses on their use in trading illegal drugs. The subtitle, "Inside the Digital Underworld", also seems misleading, as most of the book is not about illegal activity. Personally, the word "underworld" also carries connotations with "inaccessibility", "obscurity", and previously unthought-of lifestyles and subcultures. Disappointingly, there was basically no form of human behaviour here that I wasn't already aware of. I'll give you a rough rundown of the subjects of each chapter from memory and let you decide for yourself:1. A history of flaming and trolling going back to Arpanet, including the practice on 4chan's /b/ board of using the details in posters' nude self-pics to identify them. Some information on the "cypherpunks", a crypto-anarchist group.2. British nationalist and anti-extremist groups creating echo-chambers for themselves on Facebook and infiltrating each-other's management networks.3. Programmers living in an anarchist commune in Barcelona working to improve Bitcoin.Applications for the Bitcoin blockchain idea, such as Twister (decentralized P2P microblogging). Some detail on Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of Bitcoin.4. An unpleasant chapter on a man's descent into pedophilia, going from "teens" to "jailbait" to young girls, and only realizing the severity of his actions once the police called around to his house.Pedophile networks, and the people working to combat them. Some detail on the psychological effects of internet use, such as dis-association.5. Finally, a chapter on Tor-only websites. Describes the author's successful attempt to buy a small amount of cannabis. Looks at their capacity to rapidly adapt to FBI infiltration. The author finds that they are remarkable accessible, easy-to-use, and relatively risk-free.6. The author meets a cam girl as she puts on a show and receives tips from hundreds of viewers. Many viewers compete to be particular cam girl's highest tippers, making friends with them and other viewers.7. Investigates the subjects of pro-anorexia and bulimia web forums, and sites where suicidal people can receive support and advice on how to commit the act. Follows a character named Amelia made up of several sources as she is sucked into the friendly, supportive, yet toxic atmosphere of a pro-anorexia site. She is hospitalized and eventually recovers.8 (Conclusion). Investigates trans-humanist and anarcho-primitavist proponents.A little on the "singularity" concept.Wraps it up by saying that the web doesn't really have depth; everything is only a few clicks away if you know where to look. After the initial disappointment of finding that it wasn't entirely about the hidden web, I was hoping it would take more of an anthropological approach, where the aim would be to shed light on properly obscure off-shoots of human experience, e.g. otherkins, furries, conspiracy theorists, dark magicians, what have you. Instead, it reads like a series of long-form magazine articles like you might pass the time with on a plane journey.Far too much of the material in this book was simply fleshing-out stories I was already familiar with from mainstream newspapers and websites. Reddit's Futurology section, for example, where most of the information to be found in chapter 8 is widely disseminated, is often accessible from the home page and currently has 1.25 million subscribers.I also felt the asking price was too steep for what it is: I paid $16 for this on Kindle. I hope this review prevents others who are now in the position I was a few days ago from making the same mistake.

The title and subtitle are misleading, but, it's still a good read for those who don't have a deep knowledge in the topics discussed. This book does not provide in-depth technical knowledge, but still provides enough technical background for those who are interested (as I was). The focus of this book is not on the technical aspect of the dark net. It is not about bringing secrets to light. Instead, it is a commentary on the politics, sociology, human behavior, and philosophy surrounding these technologies and subcultures as well as the internet's role in allowing ideas and movements to grow and evolve (or devolve). It's well-written and thought-provoking.

The dark net is an excellent intro into what the dark web is. If you need or just want to know what is really out there in the shadowy corners of the web read this book. Its also much safer than going into the dark web itself with special browsers. I don't recommend not going there ( the darker places in the web) unless you have a real need and know exactly what you are getting into and what NOT to do there.

I enjoyed the book, and learned a couple of things, but it is really written at an everyman level and doesn't dig very deep. It would be a very good introduction to an in depth series on the subjects covered in each chapter, particularly cyber-security and crypto currency, where there are interesting issues related to shifting power to technical elites.

Eclectic mix of vingettes from various corners of the internet, mostly not on the so-called Dark Net. Not as enlightening as I had hoped but might be interesting to people relatively new to darker corners of the internet.

Vaguely interesting but not very much so. It tells you what you already know. There's a lot of porn on the internet and there are browsers that allow you to access this "Dark Net" of child porn, narcotics purchases, stolen credit card numbers and guns, trolls who troll for no apparent reason "doxing " people who are vulnerable, porn sites that allow you to tip the participants in live acts , etc. The author tells you about these things but is reluctant to provide information as to how you can access this Dark Net. That's OK, I don't wish to.

Not strictly dealing with the deep web alone but rather a survey of various dark corners of both the deep and clear nets, Bartlett provides an illuminating look at people and subcultures not often discussed in such detail. It's a thought provoking book in many ways and readers should expect to be both intrigued and disturbed by what they find.

If you have a technical background in computers - do not buy this book. There is literally nothing interesting in here. If you do not know anything about the dark net and are not capable (technically) of downloading, installing, and using TOR, you should buy this book
