Love the style of the writing and philosophical bent. Many points had me nodding and feeling like she's telling my story in large part (I, too, have a life in code, and Ellen is my spiritual mentor). I'm not finished with the book I may do a follow-up. But I wish I could give it 5 stars. I have to give it 4 because, well, its a view of programming that's from a bygone age where the ideal programmer resembles the electrical engineer. Even the term "Software Engineer" (as opposed to "Computer Scientist") is not really about engineering. Programming is more a liberal art, where survivorship of ideas expressed in code depends largely on a design ethos that puts amenability to change as paramount, not any "single best way" to solve a problem: programming being the first human-computer interaction. I was also saddened to see this myth of meritocracy perpetuated again. There are no meritocracies, only "mirrortocracies", programming being one of the best examples. The boys (and it's generally boys, yes) that get ahead mostly come from privilege already. Even Ellen's own observations point in this direction. But somehow she can't see it clearly or doesn't want to write THAT book. I still love her work.

I read this because a family member is pursuing computer programming as a career. This book gave me some insight into what a career in that field entails. I found it useful and interesting.

If you have some computer programming in your life, this is the book for you. I started in 1968 and Ellen's book describes much of my life. If you are not a programmer, her insight into how your programmer friends minds work and into how our world is changing and the machines are starting to win are also well worth the time to check this book out. All of that and she seems like somebody who would be fun to spend time with. Ellen, if you ever get to Sacramento, I'd love to buy you lunch or have you over for dinner.

Creative storytelling of her personal experiences in the very exciting silicon valley technology industry during fascinating times. Ellen is insightful, intelligent, introspective, funny, witty and really knows how to spin an interesting story. Loved this!

Silicon Valley brands itself as progressive, but really, it’s a less honest Wall Street: a small geographic location dedicated to generating mass amounts of wealth for a small, select group of primarily white men. This book intelligently dissects all the hypocritical intricacies of this world and offers a glimmer of hope in the messiness of humanity, civil society, even the corporeal.

I am not native English speaker, so it felt kind of mooshy whooshy lalala... still gave me pretty good perspective.

Excellent insight by a true philosopher of computing.

I loved this book, I agree with Ullman' s view on where technology is going. I am equally worried about privacy in our connected IoT world today. The Interned is still the wild west.

#6,353 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

As much as we love all Julia Donaldson books, Room on the Broom and Stick Man are our favorites! The story is so much fun. A friendly witch starts her travels with one friend, but ends up making several more friends who help her find lost items along the way. She finds room on her broom for all the animals asking for rides, and they repay her kindness in the end. This new board book version is more fun than the edition we borrowed from the library. The library version I'm familiar with seems to have been "Americanized" and some of the changes are a bit of a stretch. But this one seems to be closer to the original. Below are changes between editions (library version first, then new board book edition).-And long ginger hair in a braid down her back.-And long ginger hair which she wore in a plait (plait means braid)-The witch laughed out loud and held on to her hat, But away blew the bow from her braid - just like that!-The witch laughed aloud and held onto her hat, But away blew the bow from her long ginger plait!-"I am a dragon, as mean as can be, And you, witch, look like a good supper to me!"-"I am a dragon, as mean as can be, And I'm planning to have WITCH AND CHIPS for my tea!"-The dragon drew nearer and started to drool. He said, "I won't let you go- do you think I'm a fool?"-The dragon drew nearer and, licking his lips, Said, "Maybe this once I'll have witch without chips."-A nest for the bird and a pool for the frog-A nest for the bird and a shower for the frog

We had borrowed this book from our local library, and my autistic son loved it so much that he wanted me to read it every night. I decided we needed to find him a copy of his own. I saw some reviews that said that some of the lines had been changed. We got the board book and all the lines are correct. If you want a good copy of this book, order the board book, NOT the paperback or hardback!

I seriously love this story. I actually saw it on Netflix first and thought it was so adorable and cute. So when I found out that it was actually a childrens book of course I jumped on my trusty Amazon and ordered one right away.I ordered the board book because I have an 18 month old that just LOVES the sound of paper ripping so the paperback probably not a good idea for a couple more years. Book came undamaged and a perfect size for me to read to my toddler. He loves to point out the kitty and the puppy, and we are working on 'frog' and 'bird'. Such an adorable friendship story! Good for your own children or to give as a gift for a child under the age of 8.This is also the same author as The Gruffalo which is another wonderful story! Both book AND claymation stories recommended. If fact, anything from Julia Donaldson!I paid full price for this item and review it to give other buyers out there more information not listed and whether I would recommended it.

After checking out this book from the library, my son was requesting it daily. We couldn't wait to add it to our personal library permanently, but when it arrived, the text was different from the version we had grown to love.Instead of the adorable text:"A witch with french fries tastes delicious to me!" and "Just this once I'll have witch WITHOUT fries!"we found the unappetizing text:"And you, witch, look like a good supper to me" and "He said, 'I won't let you go, do you think I'm a fool?'"Say what?!Others have experienced the same thing, so please go and look at a physical copy in a book store instead of ordering through Amazon if you want to be guaranteed the original (and far superior!) version. This copy is going back to Amazon, and I've already talked to Barnes and Noble about getting the correct version. It's worth the extra 3 bucks. The original version gets a perfect 5 star rating, but we are completely disappointed in what Amazon shipped to us.

-Arrived in the time amazon said it would arrive and in great condition.-My 2 1/2yr old son LOVES it! I admit that I love it too and enjoy reading it to him. He loves the "whoosh" part. It has improved his vocabulary due to how excited he gets to "read it" and then when I read it to him. It's a really cute book. Netflix has the 26 min video of this book on there and it's cute. It is word for word with the book, I'm happy I came across the 30 movie, that's what made me buy the book and my son loves it.-I even got Room on the Broom apps which are cute. If my son were older he would be able to enjoy it but it's still nice to know that they made the apps educational and fun.

We were introduced to this story by the Netflix short. When we saw the board games on sale here on Amazon, we decided to purchase quite a few books as holiday gifts for little ones. The book is just as delightful as the Netflix version. The rhyming is catching, flowing and natural. The story is of a witch and a cat that take a flight on a broom. Mishaps occur on the way forcing them to stop. Each time, they are greeted by a helpful animal that asks to join the ride. The witch always gives a gleeful YES and they go on. They encounter a dragon whose favorite meal is french fries and witch but the witch's friends come to her rescue. It's a delightful story that is definitely worth a read with little ones

The artwork is a strong partner to the stories, and supports the challenge of the prayer that closes each one.” -- Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop and Primate

From the Back Cover

THE GIFT OF GOD'S LOVE FOR CHILDREN EVERYWHERE Desmond Tutu retells more than fifty of his most beloved stories, artfully highlighting God's desire for all people to love one another and to find peace and forgiveness in their hearts. Many of the finest artists from around the world have been selected to illustrate the stories. In an attempt to create the first truly global Bible for children, the artists have been invited to portray the stories with the style and richness of their own culture. Their stunning color illustrations allow readers to experience the Bible stories as if they were there---with Adam and Eve in the garden, with Noah on the ark, with Abraham in the desert, and with Jesus on the mountaintop. Every story shows how God works through history and ends with a short prayer, which personalizes the message for each reader's own life. Archbishop Tutu's wisdom, compassion, and sense of humor shine throughout, as he reminds us that 'We are all God's children.' Archbishop Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his lifelong struggle to bring equality, justice, and peace to his native country of South Africa. In 1986, he was elected Archbishop of Cape Town, the highest position in the Anglican Church in Southern Africa. Tutu is currently the Chair of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders who are working to promote the shared interests of humanity. In 2009 Tutu received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor. He is known for his great love for children, as well as his powerful and profound understanding of the message of Jesus Christ. The Archbishop lives in South Africa with his wife, Leah. They have four children and seven grandchildren. 'In the spirit of celebrating children all over the world, each illustrator in this book has been invited to draw on their own unique and rich cultural heritage in their portrayal of these Biblical stories. Their art is truly a marvelous reflection of how we are all made in God's image.' --(Archbishop) Desmond Tutu

I purchased this book because the cover was of a brown-skinned Jesus, something very important to me as I don’t want my children to internalize a white Anglo-Saxon version of Jesus. What I didn’t realize is that each story included is illustrated by a different artist - so the same character (like Abraham or Jesus) is depicted in a different way, sometimes with varying skin tones or hair color or etc. But this was even better, ultimately, than a book with one artist’s vision, as it helped my 3&5 year old understand that no one knows what these people looked like for sure. It’s been a good conversation that has led into a bit of ancient human history (we all came from Africa, black and brown skinned people were the norm, then white skin developed later). Overall a great choice to help with that awareness! I also love how the stories are written out and chosen as they are very appropriate for young audiences. I don’t feel that all Bible stories are appropriate or understandable to the very young. Each story is followed by a simple and understandable prayer related to the story, such as one for the Creation that thanks God for the earth and reminds us that we are to care for it. This Bible book sits alongside the Jesus Storybook Bible and some individual books by Katherine Sully, and I’m quite pleased with the selection for my preschoolers.

I often recommend children's Bible storybooks to give children and adults a quick overview of the Bible. However, I am very critical of such storybooks because the beliefs of the author and their interpretations of Scripture color and shape the stories.I first encountered "Children of God Storybook Bible" at a school book fair. The fact that it was authored by Archbishop Desmond Tutu immediately attracted my attention. He is a Christian, an Anglican, and more importantly, he grew up in South Africa under Apartheid. With Nelson Mandela he was a major proponent of non-violence in the black struggle for equality. If anyone has earned the right to interpret Sacred Scripture as one of "God's faithful little ones", Archbishop Desmond Tutu has. The stories are faithfully, sensitively, and beautifully written, touching heart and mind with its compassion and imaginative expression. Prayer concludes each sharing showing how this story impacts us today. In recognition of the equality of all God's children, Archbishop Tutu asked artists from all over the world to share their insights by illustrating a few stories. Bible heroes and heroines dance across the pages in exquisite painting to symbolic drawings, Heroes and heroines reflect the nationality of their artists, from Irish to African, from American to Asian. The "Children of God Storybook Bible" is one of my favorite books and I highly recommend it.

This edition of Children of God Storybook was a delightful surprise - it includes CD'S with Archbishop Tutu reading the stories. The children for whom the book was a gift were so delighted with the book, and especially the CD'S - they wanted to take them to their Sunday School so everyone could listen to his delightful voice. The two older children are avid readers, the youngest is 2 years old. To give the older children some understanding of Archbishop Tutu's life, ministry, and Umbuntu theology I suggested they watch the Craig Ferguson interview with the Archbishop on YouTube. The interview is one of the best Ferguson did, in my opinion. The Archbishop speaks simply, and with great delight. I wanted the children to have the benefit of a "visual" to go with the delightful voice that may sound like he knows no pain or hardship. The children found the interview online, and watched it with their parents. I suggest you do the same. The book is beautifully illustrated, and each story is two or three pages long. It would make a very special gift for a Baptism, for a God-child or special children in your life. It is a wonderful introduction to stories of faith from the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Testament.

Beautifully and imaginatively drawn illustrations, usually just on a two-page spread for each story. Artists are 12 people from all kinds of backgrounds and styles (and their art reflects both racial and artistic diversity), but the kaleidoscope of approaches works well. Bishop Tutu's gentle story-telling rhythms come through on every page, and each story includes a sweet prayer. I brought this out to read 1 story from it to my 3-y-o granddaughter, and she settled in to the rhythm of the story immediately, even though the usual books I read with her are the sentence-a-page pictures books. then she asked for another story and sat through that one, too. This is my go-to gift for new parents or grandparents (if they are people of faith). I treasure my own copy.

This book is so beautiful! I love how it represents all people in the world. The authors requested art from all different countries to make each page, and many different ethnicities are shown. I love the way Tutu explains Bible stories in a way that is understandable for children and very sweet to read. For example, he explains creation as God's love bubbling over. God "Clapped his hands with joy" at looking at all of creation. It reads like a story and is full of emotion.

This is by far the best Children's storybook Bible I've come by. Finally, we hear the stories paraphrased as Jesus would speak them. Many Children's resources tell the biblical stories through a platonic lens with "hope" being some kind of non-bodied existence somewhere else (not here). Jesus' teaching goes the other direction and Tutu's paraphrase helps us see that hope is born through compassion and is rooted in this time and place. "May your kingdom come," Jesus said. What a wonderful book to help us and our children live into "God's Dream" together.
