It was refreshing, to say the least, how familiar -and unfamiliar- sentiments were expressed in this collection. We all go through a phase growing up where we're trying to define who we are, we're carving ourselves out of a chunk of rock, wood, some other raw material perhaps... imagine doing that whilst being aware/reminded you're much more different than the rest of those around you trying to do the same.Lozada-Oliva managed to help me understand how much harder it is to feel like an outsider when you're actually home. I'm an immigrant, I have certain feelings that are not the same as those who feel like immigrants in their own country. That line where someone asked her sister if she spoke any English just by the way she looked, like she was an outsider, like if English wasn't her first language... it bothers me sometimes how I have to lose punctuation marks and that my last name is no longer Pérez but Perez and yes it sounds different.Nonetheless, these pages show courage, resilience, acceptance, strength in the face of whatever struggle. Being happy with who you are and who you've become, being proud of that and of your achievements in the face of all of that/those who tried to make you feel alien. This collection is 43 pages long, but the feelings they hold into them, uff. My favorites were "You Know How to Say Arroz con Pollo but Not What You Are" and "What If My Last Name got a Bikini Wax, Too". Can't wait to read more of her material/work 😊
A really excellent collection from a poet who I only just discovered, but am looking forward to reading more of. I loved how it touched out the oft-buried taboos of women and body hair and the societal expectations they tend to engender. How a lot of the hatred and judgment starts early, and grows and grows. There were definitely parts that hit close to home, and reminded me a lot of the painful judgment I cast on myself when I was growing up. I especially liked when Melissa mentions the girls who (and I'm paraphrasing) "took a whole election cycle to grow a single tuft of armpit hair." Almost stood up and cheered, like YES. Subverting beauty "norms" looks different on everyone, and is less socially acceptable on those of us whose legs get a five o'clock shadow an hour after getting out of the shower. This was a collection both intimate and universal, and I'm looking forward to checking out more of her work.
Extremely personable poetry. Through this book, I grew to learn and love the writer as I would a friend. Although I was more inthralled by her live, spoken word performances, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love her internal conflicts that arise within the book, and enjoyed experiencing them in such a personal level. I love the focus on race in America that was well presented without being too political.Recommended read for sure!
Great book - she deconstructs white feminism in the way she writes about body hair and being seen through a pretty white girl gaze. This won't be the last from Melissa. I'm excited to read what she has to say next.
Peluda is an excellent book of poetry about what it means to be child of immigrants in this country. The poetry is so so good.
