I took a beginning music theory class last summer, and I've been looking for books that summarize that material, and take it to the next level. This is not that book. The biggest criticism that I have of this book, is that it's written like a science text rather than a music book. In other words, lots of yak-aty-yak, and relatively little actual music. In other words when they present a concept, there aren't nearly enough examples, exercises, and illustrations of the concept. The weird thing about the book is that it absolutely rushes through all the building block stuff, rhythms, note values, signatures, scales etc., then have actually a really nice long section on chords. Go figure. Anyway, there are much better books for people learning the basics of music theory.

Don't think that the fact it is in the Dummies series this book will be a breeze - no it is still hard work. It is a good book and it does cover a lot. However, if you are a guitar player you might find Music Theory by Hal Leonard more appropriate and more practicable, and more likely to be actually used by you or a student. If you are serious, as a guitar player I would get both because with Hal Leonard you will be doing more "doing" and with this book more " formal education". This book uses the piano keys to explain while the other the guitar fingerboard. Any formal music theory will use the piano. Both have sound file, in a CD with Hal, online with this book.

Surprisingly well written for a "dummies" book. Even after half a lifetime of music experience, this book covered things I didn't know, things that were never taught in any lessons, classes, or groups.

As an amateur musician since age 10, I thought I had a pretty good understanding of music theory. However, as I have been spending more time with my music since retiring, I found some "issues" ... and my previous music theory reference work was long lost to the past. From the very first "for Dummies" books, I have disliked the inherent insult in the title. ... But, past experience with several titles has proved that the "for Dummies" format leads to a reasonably clear discussion of the covered topic's issues. This book provided the clear discussion that both reminded me of "lost" knowledge ... and I even discovered a few things I'd never realized. The construct of "for Dummies" books delivers a step-by-step approach that builds from first principles to a full understand -- at least in a general level. As such, I would say this is a good book for beginning music students as well as a good review/reference work for the more experienced musician, who as perhaps forgotten past knowledge. Obviously, this is not really a book intended for the advanced musician.

So far so good. Still reading/learning. Is pretty simple to use. Teaches music theory to everyone without making you feel dumb. It still takes me a lot of work to really learn it but this book makes it easier...

Mainly purchased it to get a quick review of things i learned years ago. It is well worth the money i spent. There's been a couple of times in this book when i was surprised about some of the info. It made sense. Then i realized all those years that i played i didn't really know the all technical parts like i thought I did. No one ever corrected me. Ha!

It's really too difficult for a real "dummy" like me. I don't think this book is for real beginners. I've never had ANY music instruction in my life. I got lost in it after about fifty pages. I'm not stupid about other things, but I think I'd be better off taking some kind of keyboard lessons so I could physically experiment with what the authors are trying to explain to me. I am currently learning to play the ukulele, and I need to know more about scales, sharps, flats, and keys other than C. I have learned a little about music vocabulary, for which I am grateful.

if you started taking piano lessons at a mature age (I did) and didn't like learning from kids books (I didn't), then this book is for you!It explains the basics of music theory in a straight forward way, and I was able to bookmark & highlight sections I want to remember and re-visit.SO glad I found this book.

I am learning to play the Lowrey Organ and, having no musical background whatsoever, thought it might help me handle the key boards a little better if I knew a bit of music theory. I'll sat that the first four or five chapters were helpful; from a musical knowledge point of view but, there was not much to help me with making better sounding music on my organ. For people who want to compose or for musicians who already play well and would like to be able to work in harmony with other musicians, the book is for you...
