The time together is good for their blossoming romance, but what will happen when Rose realizes that the only way to free her lover from his captivity is to lose him forever?Review: It is truly a mystery to me that this author's writing style and my taste in reading material can be a perfect match one day and then polar opposites the next. I LOVED her Viking Series, so when I discovered that she had written a separate time-travel romance with a Viking hero, I had it downloaded to my Kindle within minutes. Unfortunately, it wasn't even in the same ballpark as the other series.Remember the Back to the Future movie series? Marty McFly travels back in time and accidentally changes history. When he returns to the future, nothing is as it should be because his actions changed the space-time continuum and put the world on a different trajectory. In order to put his world right again, he has to travel back in time and fix his mess. Until Forever is the exact same story with different characters.I kept humming the Back to the Future soundtrack while reading this story, which was awfully annoying. But as far as the book is concerned, I was mostly disappointed that the time travel did not involve Viking history or settings at all. Thorn chose to go back to an English war, not to his home. Why would I want to read a Viking time-travel book that has nothing to do with Vikings or their history? The way this book was written, Thorn being a Viking was completely inconsequential. But this was not the worst part about his choice not to travel to his own past. The worst part was that he could have broken the curse entirely if he had gone back to kill the witch who cursed him before she had the chance to do it. Then he could have had his entire life back. His decision not to do that was completely illogical.Thorn's curse didn't make much sense either. In the book synopsis, Thorn is trapped in his sword until summoned by a woman (like a genie in a lamp.) But in the actual book, Thorn is in Valhalla in between summons. Valhalla is hardly a curse for a Viking, it was the goal of that culture to be rewarded with Valhalla in the afterlife. And even though hundreds of years could pass between summons, only a few days pass in Valhalla. So in his thousand years of captivity, it was a fraction of that time for him. Doesn't seem like much of a curse, does it?I could probably list another dozen things that were wrong with this story, but I'll spare you from more of my ranting. The only saving grace was that Thorn and Rose were solid characters. Bottom line: Good characters, severely botched plot lines, not recommended. If you want a good Viking romance, try her Viking Series that includes Fires of Winter, Hearts Aflame, and Surrender My Love (Fires of Winter is the best of the three.) It isn't a time-travel series, but the story construction is so much better.
Yet again, Johanna Lindsey has crafted a nice romance that will keep you entertained, whether on the beach or by the fire. No suspense in sight, although time-travel and mystical curses offer up some unique plot elements that set this apart from Ms. Lindsey's usual Regency or Highland romances.Thorn is a unique brand of hero, self-sure yet bound to the curse of the sword. His antics within the modern twenty-first century are hilarious, and by far one of the best highlights of the book. Roseleen is okay as a heroine - she starts as shy and insecure, and then becomes into her own as the story moves along, finally metamorphising into a fully developed heroine. Thorn is my favorite character by far, and I felt Roseleen was merely a nice complement to him for 3/4 of the book.Nonetheless, this was another enjoyable read from Ms. Lindsey, and it definitely stands out from her Regency/Highland crowd. I'd recommend it to regular Lindsey fans. If you're new to her work, save this one until after you've read a few of her Regency romances - Man of My Dreams, Captive of My Desires and A Rogue of My Own are a few of my favorites - otherwise, you might be surprised by the rest of her repetoire.
I read this book as it was recommended by a fb site that recommends books to read after the Outlander series. I assume this book was recommended because of the time travel aspect. That's about the only similarities. The book's main character is a history professor who collects swords, and acquires one that is cursed, thus the time travel, and then comes the introduction to a Viking warrior. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I found this book to be mostly cliche and predictable, though there were a few entertaining moments. I can't say I would recommend if you're looking for a smart, sexy, entertaining read. It fell sadly short.
If this was my first Johanna Lindsey book, I probably would have never read anything else of hers. I had to literally force myself to get to the end of the story. It was so badly written, the romance was stilted, and I am not impressed with the hero or heroine. Snore fest to say the least. If this is your first Johanna Lindsey romance, please save this for later (or never). Read Captive Bride, Fires of Winter, Hearts Aflame, Man of My Dreams, etc. Her other books are so much better.
Almost all of Mrs. Lindsey books are great, and I won't begin to write a review about each one of them. What made me feel I HAD to say something about this one is the fact that it is very, very different from the others.Aside from romance books I'm partial to SF books (you may think this a strange combination, I assure you it is not :) ) and it certainly was great to see a love-story combined with a time-travel adventure sooo beautifully. What surprised me most, as I had not expected it, is that Mrs. Lindsay payed very much attention to the time-travel paradoxes and everything fell into place nicely, solved in good old SF style. I had not expected this from a romance-writer, there are certainly many SF writers out there who do not tie up all loose ends and who make mistakes when trying to deal with alternate history lines and the like.OK, enough about this. Besides, it's not the only good thing about the book. The story is also very funny (the situation of a man from the past thrown into present is always hilarious). I have to confess also that I never knew so many details about the Norman conquest before :).The ending... well, it lets you understand whatever you want. Mrs. Lindsey wraps it up nicely both for those of us who believe in fantastic adventures and for those who do not. Well, I know for sure which category I fall in...
I loved this book despite other lower ratings. It's a good time travel romance with your stereo typical gruff Viking warrior who doesn't know how to express his feelings for Roseleen. They travel back and forth between present and past and mess up the sequence of events and have to fix the problems they caused in their wake. I love the ending ...
