“The Children of God Storybook Bible is a wonderful way to introduce my young grandchildren to our Christian faith.” -- President Jimmy Carter, PresidentMagnificently illustrated and beautifully written Scriptural wisdom from one of the church’s greatest heroes. This book is the one children’s book that every Christian family should own. This book will serve as the main devotional book for my children in the upcoming year. In Children of God, Bishop Tutu presents Biblical truths reflecting a much-needed global perspective. --Soong-Chan Rah Milton B. The artwork is a strong partner to the stories, and supports the challenge of the prayer that closes each one.” -- Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop and Primate

From the Back Cover

THE GIFT OF GOD'S LOVE FOR CHILDREN EVERYWHERE Desmond Tutu retells more than fifty of his most beloved stories, artfully highlighting God's desire for all people to love one another and to find peace and forgiveness in their hearts. Many of the finest artists from around the world have been selected to illustrate the stories. In an attempt to create the first truly global Bible for children, the artists have been invited to portray the stories with the style and richness of their own culture. Their stunning color illustrations allow readers to experience the Bible stories as if they were there---with Adam and Eve in the garden, with Noah on the ark, with Abraham in the desert, and with Jesus on the mountaintop. Every story shows how God works through history and ends with a short prayer, which personalizes the message for each reader's own life. Archbishop Tutu's wisdom, compassion, and sense of humor shine throughout, as he reminds us that 'We are all God's children.' Archbishop Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his lifelong struggle to bring equality, justice, and peace to his native country of South Africa. In 1986, he was elected Archbishop of Cape Town, the highest position in the Anglican Church in Southern Africa. Tutu is currently the Chair of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders who are working to promote the shared interests of humanity. In 2009 Tutu received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor. He is known for his great love for children, as well as his powerful and profound understanding of the message of Jesus Christ. The Archbishop lives in South Africa with his wife, Leah. They have four children and seven grandchildren. 'In the spirit of celebrating children all over the world, each illustrator in this book has been invited to draw on their own unique and rich cultural heritage in their portrayal of these Biblical stories. Their art is truly a marvelous reflection of how we are all made in God's image.' --(Archbishop) Desmond Tutu

I purchased this book because the cover was of a brown-skinned Jesus, something very important to me as I don’t want my children to internalize a white Anglo-Saxon version of Jesus. What I didn’t realize is that each story included is illustrated by a different artist - so the same character (like Abraham or Jesus) is depicted in a different way, sometimes with varying skin tones or hair color or etc. But this was even better, ultimately, than a book with one artist’s vision, as it helped my 3&5 year old understand that no one knows what these people looked like for sure. It’s been a good conversation that has led into a bit of ancient human history (we all came from Africa, black and brown skinned people were the norm, then white skin developed later). Overall a great choice to help with that awareness! I also love how the stories are written out and chosen as they are very appropriate for young audiences. I don’t feel that all Bible stories are appropriate or understandable to the very young. Each story is followed by a simple and understandable prayer related to the story, such as one for the Creation that thanks God for the earth and reminds us that we are to care for it. This Bible book sits alongside the Jesus Storybook Bible and some individual books by Katherine Sully, and I’m quite pleased with the selection for my preschoolers.

I often recommend children's Bible storybooks to give children and adults a quick overview of the Bible. However, I am very critical of such storybooks because the beliefs of the author and their interpretations of Scripture color and shape the stories.I first encountered "Children of God Storybook Bible" at a school book fair. The fact that it was authored by Archbishop Desmond Tutu immediately attracted my attention. He is a Christian, an Anglican, and more importantly, he grew up in South Africa under Apartheid. With Nelson Mandela he was a major proponent of non-violence in the black struggle for equality. If anyone has earned the right to interpret Sacred Scripture as one of "God's faithful little ones", Archbishop Desmond Tutu has. The stories are faithfully, sensitively, and beautifully written, touching heart and mind with its compassion and imaginative expression. Prayer concludes each sharing showing how this story impacts us today. In recognition of the equality of all God's children, Archbishop Tutu asked artists from all over the world to share their insights by illustrating a few stories. Bible heroes and heroines dance across the pages in exquisite painting to symbolic drawings, Heroes and heroines reflect the nationality of their artists, from Irish to African, from American to Asian. The "Children of God Storybook Bible" is one of my favorite books and I highly recommend it.

This edition of Children of God Storybook was a delightful surprise - it includes CD'S with Archbishop Tutu reading the stories. The children for whom the book was a gift were so delighted with the book, and especially the CD'S - they wanted to take them to their Sunday School so everyone could listen to his delightful voice. The two older children are avid readers, the youngest is 2 years old. To give the older children some understanding of Archbishop Tutu's life, ministry, and Umbuntu theology I suggested they watch the Craig Ferguson interview with the Archbishop on YouTube. The interview is one of the best Ferguson did, in my opinion. The Archbishop speaks simply, and with great delight. I wanted the children to have the benefit of a "visual" to go with the delightful voice that may sound like he knows no pain or hardship. The children found the interview online, and watched it with their parents. I suggest you do the same. The book is beautifully illustrated, and each story is two or three pages long. It would make a very special gift for a Baptism, for a God-child or special children in your life. It is a wonderful introduction to stories of faith from the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Testament.

Beautifully and imaginatively drawn illustrations, usually just on a two-page spread for each story. Artists are 12 people from all kinds of backgrounds and styles (and their art reflects both racial and artistic diversity), but the kaleidoscope of approaches works well. Bishop Tutu's gentle story-telling rhythms come through on every page, and each story includes a sweet prayer. I brought this out to read 1 story from it to my 3-y-o granddaughter, and she settled in to the rhythm of the story immediately, even though the usual books I read with her are the sentence-a-page pictures books. then she asked for another story and sat through that one, too. This is my go-to gift for new parents or grandparents (if they are people of faith). I treasure my own copy.

This book is so beautiful! I love how it represents all people in the world. The authors requested art from all different countries to make each page, and many different ethnicities are shown. I love the way Tutu explains Bible stories in a way that is understandable for children and very sweet to read. For example, he explains creation as God's love bubbling over. God "Clapped his hands with joy" at looking at all of creation. It reads like a story and is full of emotion.

This is by far the best Children's storybook Bible I've come by. Finally, we hear the stories paraphrased as Jesus would speak them. Many Children's resources tell the biblical stories through a platonic lens with "hope" being some kind of non-bodied existence somewhere else (not here). Jesus' teaching goes the other direction and Tutu's paraphrase helps us see that hope is born through compassion and is rooted in this time and place. "May your kingdom come," Jesus said. What a wonderful book to help us and our children live into "God's Dream" together.
