There are three of these books, and I love each and every one of them. We put off purchasing copies because the local library has them, but I figured when my kids (aged 4 and 6) shouted "THE LIBRARY IS OPEN WE NEED THOSE DARN SQUIRRELS" each time we drove past our town library (which is often!), that I should just man up and buy them. It's a hilarious book about a grouchy old man who hates everything except the birds in his yard, and what starts out as a comical story quickly ends as a poignant tale of friendship when the lonely old man is befriended by the very thing he hates most: those darn squirrels. We read this constantly at my house, and it never gets old for my husband and I, which is good because some children's books become mundane after the second or third read. The pictures are hilarious as well, and there are small nuances on each page that only make them funnier. I think that to enjoy these books you'll need a quirky sense of humor, though, so if you don't think funny old men in silly pants and sarcastic squirrels are funny, then it may not be for you. As for me, I'm buying the next two in the series! (I also read these books to my 6th grade classes, and they found them just as hilarious as I did.)

I purchased Those Darn Squirrels based upon the cover of the old man yelling at them in the tree. Reminded me of my neighbor so had to check it out. My daughter found this book to be like a ride on a horse through the English country side. She enjoyed how the squirrels and the old man were at odds. Laughed at the old man's name being "Fookwire". The old man as drawn was entertaining to my daughter and i chuckled too. Shaking his fist at the squirrels like an old man yelling at clouds or on the internet as you will both gave us a laugh. We enjoyed the story, even myself found this to be really funny for a children's book. She asked if squirrels are really that smart, i told her "Yes, they can be smarter than some people." as proven by those so called squirrel proof bird feeders that litter the suburbs. After reading the book inquired if there were others in the series. I believe the continuing sage of Old Man Fookwire and Those Darn Squirrels will be a set right next to the Gerald and Piggie series.

My 5 year old loves all 3 of the Darn Squirrels books. He anxiously awaited the Cat Next Door, and was thrilled when it arrived. I had to read it twice in a row. He asked me if there were going to be more. I think he wants an entire series.Fortunately, the books are silly, but not in a way an adult would find terribly dull. They aren't great literature, by far, but they're amusing and fun.My son and I both shake our fists and shout, "Those darn squirrels," every time it shows up on the page. He thinks it's hilarious, and I think it's adorable.

Bought this book for my son for Christmas because he and I both love Dragons Love Tacos and this one had good reviews. In our opinion it's definitely nowhere near as good as Dragons Love Tacos vut it still has some of the same type of wit to it so while it's not our go-to book for bedtime I'm not regretting the purchase.

I bought this for my dad to read my stepdaughter. When it arrived, I couldn't stop laughing, it's basically my dad in the book- a man who loves to watch the birds, doesn't want the squirrels eating all the bird seed, and who tries to find ways to stop them. I'm going to use it as a "card" from her to him.

I started reading Adam's books to my preschool class a few months ago. They fell in love the second i introduced the titles. We are in the city and play in the park. They relate to the squirrels, they already thought we had a dragon living above the classroom and love blowing bubbles...now they get where they go. Adam gets the mindset and imgination of a child. I love it. And i love they are all illustrated by someone i went to art school with :)

My six-year-old twin grandchildren (a boy and a girl) absolutely loved this book, along with Those Darn Squirrels and Those Darn Squirrels Fly South. They giggle and laugh at the marvelous story, the funny words (like bonga birds), and the creative illustrations. They want to have it read to them again and again. This is their favorite series of books. Please Adam and Daniel, write another book about Those Darn Squirrels. We love them!!!!

My daughter (age 3) thinks this book is hilarious and my husband and I do too. She now wants to make bird feeders!Tells a subtle little moral and would be appropriate for many age groups. I substitute the words "did not like" for "hate" for my daughter because she misuses that word frequently. I don't like that word in kid's books personally, but the rest of the story is so good that I don't mind skipping past it.I plan to use this as a seasonal book in our home, and bring it out during fall when the story takes place. This is a great addition to our fall and winter collection of books.

As such, this adventure fulfills its purpose. I highly recommend it.

It was too fictionalized for the person I was going to give it to. Would be OK for elementary school child, though maybe oversimplified even there.

Reason for Reading: I've enjoyed other books in this series.An introductory book on the history and building of the Great Pyramids of Giza. A story approach is taken as Isabel travels back in time and gets first hand information from on-the-spot witnesses. She travels back in time to the building of each of the three pyramids and we learn the history of each while learning how the building progressed from the step pyramid to the smooth-sided pyramid. I did find it a bit unbelievable as Isabel popped up in her jeans and jacket and "interviewed" the Ancient Egyptians without them batting an eyelash at this strange modern woman. However, the Isabel Soto books are fun. Bringing a positive role model and career choice (minus the time travel :-) along with basic information. While these books are usually deservedly recommended for a wide age range, this particular one is too general to be of much use beyond the Grade 3/4 level. This book is more of a starting point to see if the subject matter is of interest.

This was a great primer on the history of the Egyptian pyramids. The story was wasy to read and follow and was written so that young readers could easily comprehend things. The time-travel element was fun and my daughters seemed to like that. While there were a few elements that were a bit out there for me as a parent, the kids loved it and in the end they were even more interested in learning more which is always the sign of a good book!*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*

I really do enjoy and respect the author's story, her ethics, and the eco product line she built, but that's mostly what I got from this. She gives some examples here and there related to her own business, and any brief ideas for the reader are pretty generic (80/20 rule for example). I guess I was just really hoping there would be more meat to this book, but I'm also an information consumer to the max, so maybe I'm just over-read. I'm a "tiny" business owner too (although I think my companies would fall under "micro", the businesses described in this book didn't scream "tiny" to me) and I was looking for something to recommend to women I mentor with more direct concepts, methods and examples.

As an artist and owner of my own tiny business, I was hoping to love this book. So much of what's written about small businesses seems to be focused on "growing your empire" and "scaling up," but I've come to realize that I never want to be a big business with dozens of staff and multiple locations - I just want to make a good living. My first career was focused on training staff, hiring the right people, managing processes and projects and people and everything but the thing I wanted to make/do. So this time around, I'm focused on staying tiny through strategic focus of all my skills and resources. I want to make a living without the headaches of staff, manuals, meetings, manufacturing, IT departments, and team building. That means laser focus on my core competencies, strategic allocation of dollars and time, and making difficult decisions about what to say "no" to.I wanted to find tips and lessons learned from someone who'd done the same, and the title gave me a lot of hope I'd find that here. That is not what this book is about, despite the title.First off, her definition of "tiny business" is not mine. In fact, about halfway through the book she talks about growing to $2.2 million in revenue, with seven people on staff (including herself) and outsourced manufacturing (India, I think). She talks about leveraging tens of thousands of dollars invested in trade shows, producing thousands of units, getting featured on Oprah, etc. Basically, it's the story of any small business you might see on Shark Tank. She finds her niche, exploits a market need, drives down her costs, and scales up through strategic investment.And then there's the 'lessons learned" content. She makes the point several times that you need to keep your eye on your company vision (she calls it your "why"), and weigh every decision against that "why." She says you need to think through what you want your business to bring you, and re-evaluate periodically to make sure you're getting what you want out of it. You're supposed to get outside your comfort zone. Network (she calls it "listening and learning") to make connections. Take calculated risks. If you've read any other books on business, you've seen this before. As a former business strategist, I used to teach it, and know you can find this information in countless places.But that's not my biggest obstacle to enjoying this book, because even the oldest tropes can seem new if they're reframed in a way that inspires you to think differently. But that's not the case here, and it leaves me wondering what her point was. This book is part personal essay on how she grew her business; part how-to with a few inadequately-explained "exercises" sprinkled through the chapters; part inspirational/motivational "if I can do it, you can" stories; and part common sense. Her differentiator appears to be her insistence that her business not run her life. Fair enough, but calling the book "Tiny Business" is misleading if it's really more "Run Your Business, Don't Let Your Business Run You."Finally, the chapters read like stream-of-consciousness podcast episodes, with loose organization that will defy you to go back and find that one nugget you vaguely remember and want to revisit later. The saving grace is that this is one of the shortest books on business I've ever seen (although longer than that Gawds-awful "Cheese" book), so you'll have no trouble either skimming through it, or flipping through later to find that one call-out that spoke to you.If you're a fan of "How I Built It" podcasts, this might be right up your alley as more of the same. If you've never read books on business before, you may find quite a bit to inspire you. But if you want to find a roadmap to tiny success, and a guidebook for staying tiny while making a living doing something you love, keep looking.

Women in business: There are three reasons why I think you should read this book:1. It’s about making a (great) living while still giving you the space to live2. It’s about learning to (and being energized by) saying “no” to what does not serve your business and your life3. It’s about growing in communityI own a small business and I am a woman. While men can also benefit from these messages as well, I find her ideas about forging a new path especially applicable to me. The Magic of Tiny Business, written by a very successful female entrepreneur, showed me what this new path could look like. While she doesn’t label her approach as feminine, to me it has definite feminine appeal in her focus on life and family values all the while managing your business and money, her emphasis on being clear with saying “no” (something that I as a woman definitely need help with!) and her belief in the power of community and relationships to grow business and enrich your life- very inspirational!

I wish this book has been required reading in business school for my 3 millennial children! The Magic of Tiny Business was a breath of fresh air compared to the dry books on entrepreneurship that are a struggle to get through. Using a real-world example to explore the journey of building your own business from scratch is so much more applicable and engaging. I also love how short the book was compared to so many entrepreneurship tomes that basically scare you out of wanting to do anything risky.While The Magic of Tiny Business acknowledges the risks of starting your own business, I think its “magic” is in how the author set out to mitigate these risks from the start by keeping her business focus “tiny” and ensuring that her values stay front and center, whether that was in who she partnered with or in her commitment to being home (almost) every night for dinner with her family. This balanced approach to entrepreneurship is sorely needed. I'm glad my children can start their businesses knowing that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Loved this book! The author has a great story, one which I think many of us working in the job world could learn from. A lot of people want to start their own business but have these fears. Fearing lack of knowledge or maybe the business won't generate the income we get from our current job. But the author shows us that it is possible. Mistakes and all, she did it and helps us understand how we can too. It is possible to design a business, like the author has done, to suit her life and passion...and profit.I also love the laser focus and clarity that this book has helped me to bring to my business as well. Helping me cut out the clutter and keeping the focus (but not the vision). “Tiny” has been liberating for me in my work and I loved reading about how the author made it work for her over decades. Eco Bag Products has been around since the 1990s and as founder, the author’s business journey is a real inspiration for entrepreneurs or would be entrepreneurs who are sitting on the fence.

Got the book and as soon as it hit the hands of some very bright students - they were hooked! Recommend this to all interested in bringing a hands-on approach to creativity.

For the average classroom teacher in upper grade elementary schools and middle schools, finding useful books; books that can be put to instant and practical use ... that truly adds to the educational process can be a bit difficult to find. Many of the works you find on the classroom shelf (I mean the shelf that holds the teacher's professional books and is never touched, year after year after year) are filled with either dry as dust text books that have languished there since the teacher finished their last undergraduate or graduate course and never-to-be-opened-again, or some snazzy new publication which "someone" higher up in the food chain decided would be good for all the teachers to have (having never had to read it, much less use it themselves), and in reality probably should have never have seen the working side of a printing press. Lots of good trees have died in this fashion!And then along comes a work such as "Just Deal With it" by Diana R. Jenkins! Ms. Jenkins has created a work here that is not only a valuable tool to be used in the educational process, but it is a work that enables the teacher to reach her or his charges on so many different levels and in so many different disciplines. Please, please, please...read on!This 239 page book is a collection of 19 short plays which can be used in the classroom; any class room, and used quite effectively. I have noted in my years on wondering about schools, in and out of class rooms, that most kids like to act, or at the very least, seem quite enthusiastic when allowed to become active in their own learning process. This is particularly true of the age of student being targeted here. Now putting on a "play" may seem like a daunting task; cast selection, stage, props, lines to memorize, lighting, costumes, etc. Ah, but this is not so with what we are dealing with here! Much of the work and organization has been done!The author has given us the concept of "Reader's Theater" to ponder and work with. Each of these delightful plays (More about them later), is to be read by actors and not memorized in the traditional sense. Each little play requires six to twelve student actors and for the most part all of the props can be found entirely in the class room. Costumes are not a problem as the kids are already wearing them for the most part. Rather than memorizing the lines, the students are allowed to read them as the play is being acted.The audiences for these little mini-productions can come from the rest of the class, other class rooms in the school, invited family members, nursing home dwellers, civic groups....and the list goes on. The author has given the teacher plenty of specific instructions and suggestions on the workings of each play which can be follow...or not...depending upon the comfort level of the individual teacher and the individual students.The subject of these plays cover a wide gambit of everyday situations, from encounters with substitute teachers, visits to the doctor's office, the pushy classmate, the fearful teacher the students will encounter "next year," getting along, not getting along, how to deal with difficult situations and the list goes on. One of the most important things to note here is that this author/teacher most certainly has a sense of humor and perfectly understands life as seen through the eye of a young man and woman...she knows her subject! These plays range from amusing to funny!There are of course many educational advantages to producing class plays such as this, with the first being allowing the child to become use to speaking in front of an audience; a fearful thing for most people. There is the additional benefit of the act of reading. We also have the building of organizational skills here, and each and every one of these skits teach a valuable lesson in life and give the kids something to think about. (Note: There is no "preachy" stuff here). Learning to interact with their classmates on a project such as this is a benefit that cannot be overlooked and of course there is always the chance that a "great acting talent" may be awakened in each and every child. Learning language art skills, reading skills, public speaking, writing and listening...it is all here folks for the taking.Each script is well thought out and I cannot find anything that the author has overlooked. There are parts in each play suitable for appropriate reading levels; some large parts, some small parts and some in the middle. There is room for plenty of drama, comedy, serious thought and above all, participation. The teacher is given plenty of opportunities to throw in their own spin on things if so desired.To be honest, I wish my teachers had had access to a book such as this when I was a lad; it would have added some excitement to the school day. JUST DEAL WITH IT uses humor and accessible, easy-to-read plays to teach valuable lessons about acceptance and understanding. By drawing students in to become part of the teaching, the learning follows easily and naturally. These are great for classroom use, because without the need for props and sets, the readers aren't distracted from focusing on the words or the lessons in them. As anyone who has every directed a school play knows, there is nothing more frustrating than a kid too busy goofing around with his or her prop to pay attention. Each play can be copied for classroom use. An unusual feature of this book compared to other classroom play books are the supplemental reading suggestions given for teachers who want to build on the lessons.

This book is great for teachers, parents,grandparents and others who enjoy seeing kids learn a new skill. Reader's theater allows them to jump into interpreting a script with a minimum of "baggage." They don't need props or a stage; they just read their parts and learn to become someone else. The author suggests making copies of a script for groups, so it becomes a great activity book for a get together of kids. The kids in the book are naughty and nice, thoughtful and not. The young readers learn about human nature, conflict resolution, and how to cope with parents, while having fun pretending. Great fun!

Jenkins' "readers theatre" plays for classroom use can play out in lots of small group situations -- think youth groups, Scouts, afterschool and summer programs -- there are many ways to use these truly funny but thought-provoking plays.As always, Jenkins asks her young readers/performers to "consider the journey" they are taking -- as the characters do in each of these plays. Lessons are offered -- in a subtle, humorous way!

Diana Jenkins created the perfect hook for the reluctant reader in Just Deal With It. Her collection of humorous plays are created to be read aloud as a fun way to integrate language arts, character education, and public speaking. Reader's Theatre is a humorous collection of real life problems, solved in creative ways by realistic student characters. Not only could these plays be read, and acted with minimal sets and props, but could also be chosen for older students to expand into a drama presentation. The sky is the limit.

I bought this book for my daughter's fourth grade class, and her teacher had them perform several of the readers' theatre plays. The students had great fun, enjoyed the humor, and learned several lessons about dealing with not-so-fun situations. Diana Jenkins is a master when it comes to writing about and relating to kids. I highly recommend this title for teachers and parents who want to make reading/acting fun for upper-elementary/middle school students.
