Review

"The hobbits' Shire is a microcosm of Victorian England in every way, especially the way everything works fine without interference from the institutions of the state. But can the Shire really be a model for our more complex times? The Hobbit Party, with its punning title, makes the case that it can be, should be, was meant to be, and that The Lord of the Rings expands the argument to give us images of an ethical as well as ecological politics, ever more badly needed." --Tom Shippey, Author, The Road to Middle-Earth"As with the best works of the imagination, Middle-Earth invites one into a true reality, one immersed in timeless and universal truths. Witt and Richards brilliantly delve into the most profound depths of Tolkien's endlessly fascinating soul. A true conservative in the old sense, he recorded the stories of a world in chaos, but saved by the integrity of the person willing to surrender to grace. This work offers us a true feast: the feast of nobility, truth, goodness, and beauty." --Bradley J. Birzer, Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought, University of Colorado Boulder Author, American Cicero: The Life of Charles Carroll"Beautifully written, this work gives fascinating insights into the realm of Middle-Earth. Moreover, it is a tour of the important issues of our world through Tolkien's eyes, including limited government, man's temptation to power, freedom, just war, socialism, distributism, localism, love, and death. These topics are woven seamlessly throughout, and you will leave the book with unforgettable impressions of these themes illustrated by Tolkien's imagery." --Art Lindsley, Vice President, The Institute for Faith, Work & Economics"As with the best works of the imagination, Middle-Earth invites one into a true reality, one immersed in timeless and universal truths. I've read some wise and wonderful books about the Inklings: Michael Ward's "Planet Narnia," Tom Shippey's "Tolkien, Author of the Century," Richard Purtill's "Lord of the Elves and Eldils.” I now have a new book to add to this list, Jay Richard's and Jonathan Witt's "The Hobbit Party."The Hobbit Party's premise is that Tolkien was as conservative in his political and economic views as he was old fashioned in his literary tastes. This seems to have caused much consternation among ivory tower Marxists and nihilistic postmodernist reviewers, but Richard and Witt give the evidence to back up their claims in their text and copious footnotes. The Hobbit Party begins with a look at Tolkien's views on economics, but it quickly expands to take in the professor's entire worldview. This is a worldview based as much on the classical literature of Western Europe that he knew to be fiction as biblical texts he believed to be true. Both of these sources tend to be conservative in their views of mankind and our role in the world. The Hobbit Party is an informative and enjoyable read. I would recommend it for all students of Inklings studies as well as my fellow authors of the High Fantasy genre who wish a better understanding of the beliefs that infused the stories of J. R. R. Tolkien.

The Hobbit Party did more than it promised. It not only explained Tolkien's view of political and economic freedom as shown in his works on the Free Peoples of the West in their fight against evil. It also tied these beliefs in with the spiritual undertones of the works, and consequently showed how Tolkien's faith provided for him and for his readers a cohesive and consistent worldview. Richards and Witt successfully present this worldview to the reader in language that most people can understand. It is important to read the Epilogue, because it leaves no doubt what the authors were trying to do: to give Western Civilization a "vision of freedom", a worldview that is a positive alternative to modernism by restoring faith and culture. Read it!

They make a lot of good points, but talk about neglecting the principal of charity when addressing people they disagree with. Rhetorically, the book comes across as bitter, petty, and vindictive at times. They aren't so much writing to persuade objectivity minded people that their interpretation of Tolkien is correct as writing for people who already agree with them and share the same assumptions, which is really a shame because they do have a lot of good research to back their views up.

Richards and Witt imbibed their Tolkien well and soundly refute those who would hijack his tales for purposes of "sharing and gathering" by other terms and for ostensibly nobler purposes. As Lewis said of The Lord of the Rings, "Here are beauties that pierce like swords and burn like cold iron" -- thought that invites and requires searching reflection, even as it thrills, inspires and entertains. Tolkien should have demonstrated beyond all dispute in his profound, intertwined, decades-in-imaging mythological history (and pre-history) of Middle Earth that freedom and thriving cannot be planned, that the doings of the "simple" and those who "quest" on behalf of both others and themselves (as Richards and Witt trenchantly identify various characters as Entrepreneurs) have grave importance and meaning. Kudos for the thoughtful treatments of Tolkien's thought as it relates Just War theory as well as Agrarianism and Distributism. Buy several and gift others with this gem, especially your children, your pastors and your fellow parishioners.

At last! A work of critical scholarship grounded in the actual words of the books being analyzed! Thank you, authors, for the wonderful book. It is a credit to my library and a balm for the soul. I'm not being either sarcastic or ingenuous. It has become very difficult to find books that reflect my values--even about Middle Earth which itself shaped my values from a young age. This book explores all the foundational ideas that grew me into the woman I am today through the lessons Tolkien taught me.

I have read at least 6 books on Tolkien's Middle Earth stories. This is by far the best, and this is high praise because Peter Kreeft and Joseph Pearce have written great books on this topic as well.I bought this book thinking it would be only about Tolkien's economic vision in his stories. But it is so much more. The authors cover economics, politics, and theology, and they do a magnificent job. They are well versed on Tolkien and other literature, so they draw on much wisdom and add their own.I thoroughly enjoyed this book.P. S. While it should be obvious, you really should have read both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

I'm glad I got the book though my expectation wasn't fully met. I guess there was too much time spent re-telling the stories. But, it is possible if not probably that the problem is mine. Since I'm not big into Tolkien's writings, I probably needed to have the stories told. To one well versed in the stories, they would probably find the book a little slow on the main point of the book.

I very much appreciated the clarity the authors gave on the various people who have weighed in with their takes on Tolkien and his views in the past. They did a great job of laying out what Tolkien actually said in contrast/comparison to what others thought he said. It felt like a fresh wind through my mind, blowing away some of the confusing mists that hid the view. I also enjoyed the way they wrestled with various perspectives of freedom and what one is really saying when one speaks of such a concept.

Fascinating story of the authors experience with an unusual guru. I liked the questions he raises as he attempts to understand this seemingly loving guru who gives away nearly everything he receives to others and yet allows his devotees to deify him and also allows corrupt political officials and thugs into his inner circle. How can this be? Is there something more sinister beneath the surface? Is this Guru a sham or political pawn or is he a selfless reincarnated Tulku who works within the society he is part of? On the way the reader gets a picture of a land far from western perspectives. I also enjoyed the authors other books: "A step away from Paradise" and "Windblown Clouds." Perceptive writer with a great visual gift for the terrain, and an understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism.

Another fantastic journey by Thomas Shor, sharing the scenery, culture, and feelings that dare to question authority as he wonders about the power of love vs the love of power.Themes of equality, doing your own thinking, and that even mystical experiences belong to everyone.

"“Far and away the best book on modern Dubai, packed with fascinating insights and offering a sympathetic but balanced account of the city's huge successes--and occasional failures. Krane systematically tackles pretty much every important aspect of Dubai's past and present, with absorbing accounts of the city's history and the personalities and achievements of its charismatic rulers through to vexed contemporary issues such as human-rights abuses and environmental concerns, condensing a vast amount of detail into a compellingly readable roller coaster of a narrative.” ―The Rough Guide to Dubai“Offers a vivid guide to how a Bedouin tribe turned a mud village on a scrap of desert into a glittering city state.” ―Bloomberg News“This landmark work is recommended to those interested in the history, politics, and economics of the Middle East; an excellent choice for anyone who wishes to learn more about Dubai.” ―Library Journal“A fascinating study of a small nation that has taken the ideas of modernization and capitalism to their outer limits.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Examines this small emirate with admirable evenhandedness and good humor . . . Krane also writes movingly of the conditions of the Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi workers who have built Dubai.” ―Financial Times (UK)“The author hits his stride when he assesses Dubai's current ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He proceeds to examine this small emirate with admirable even-handedness and good humor. But Krane also writes movingly of the conditions of the Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi workers who have built Dubai.” ―The Atlantic“The history of a little Emirate's epic transformation, from an impoverished pearling enclave to the shining city on the hill, is revealed in full detail. Jim Krane is a great reporter, whose journalistic credentials are brought to bear in this unique work that is infused with facts, ample history, emotion, and stunning narratives. He leads his audience into the nooks and crannies of the 'unknown' Dubai, to reveal the humanity and intrigue that pulsates beneath the surface. He shows how powerful persons with a global reach collaborated to build an economic gem out of the desert. This is a fast-moving Arabian tale, but very much a modern one; not only laden with facts, it is a guidebook and cautionary tale for other developing nations in their quest to rapidly achieve the Western dream.” ―Justin Dargin, Harvard University, author of Desert Dreams and The Dolphin Project: The Development of a Gulf Gas Initiative“Dubai is fortunate to have as skilled and passionate a chronicler as Jim Krane. The city leaps off these pages with panache, brassiness, splendor, and suffering. There is no better book about Dubai, and there may never be.” ―Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East program at CSIS, author of The Vital Triangle: China, the United States, and the Middle East“How did one of the planet's last unexplored wastelands, for millennia ignored by history, become in just a few short decades the playground of the unimaginably rich? In City of Gold, Jim Krane traces the fascinating and long overlooked history of Dubai, from pirate battles and eccentric British explorers to the glittering spires of a metropolis that emerged from nowhere, in prose as spare and enchanting as a desert fairy tale.” ―James Hider, Middle East correspondent for The Times (London), author of The Spiders of Allah: Travels of an Unbeliever on the Frontline of Holy War“A marvelous book. Beautifully written! Jim Krane has written a fascinating account of a Middle East we rarely get to hear about. Jim Krane's book on Dubai's rise and fall--in this era of global financial crisis--is a cautionary tale for us all.” ―Lourdes Garcia-Navarro, NPR's Middle East correspondent"

This is a well written, concise, very readable and fascinating portrait of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. Although I understand that its sale has been banned in Dubai, it strikes me as a very complimentary/upbeat portrayal of what has been achieved in the desert. Krane does not ignore the social issues such as the poor treatment of labor and lack of political freedom. But the overall judgement is that the Al-Maktoum family has repeatedly taken huge, gutsy bets that have paid off big. We have them to thank for one of the world's most modern, efficient and livable cities -- certainly in this part of the world. This book really hits the mark.

American journalist and former Dubai resident Jim Krane has written perhaps the best introduction yet to Dubai. An overview of the UAE's brief recorded history is preamble to the larger story of how a fishing village that wasn't electrified until 1960 became the regional hub for transport, banking, media and tourism. Krane's near breathlessness in describing the planning and building of one seemingly impossible project after another is tempered in the second half by a more sober reflection on the exploitation of labor, abuse of the environment, and marginalization of the native population.Krane writes well and interviews widely but perhaps his greatest strength is his sensitivity to a textured narrative, of not being satisfied with a simple story, in presenting angles and opinions that are often contradictory. Not only does this make his story richer, but you're never quite sure how he thinks of any of this until the very end. The long-time resident finds himself seduced by Dubai, a city that developed so quickly that it's no longer in the modern age, but "somewhere out in the future."The unstated assumption among Dubai observers seems to be that of most economists, politicians and other social engineers - life is better when you have more money and more stuff. It is therefore the job of those in power to enable people to make and accumulate more. And since Dubai is doing that quite well, it must be a swell place. Thanks to the generosity of the Sheikhs, Emiratis have one of the highest per capita incomes on the planet. They have all the stuff they could ever want, including literacy and higher life expectancy. But where is the benefit of living longer when your life amounts to little more than shopping? When your work is largely meaningless, a government job that is often nothing but a welfare appointment, a title to justify paying you a wage? Where's the benefit in a house full of great stuff when you've lost your culture and identity? When you are a minority in your own country?Krane talks to a 39 year old mother who during her lifetime saw Dubai grow from a town in which boys and girls played together each afternoon in the creek, to a heaving metropolis in which you can't safely walk across the street because of the traffic. Children spend more time indoors in schools and in houses separated by wide roads. People work longer. "Before, life had a taste. Now nothing makes you happy. Before, you could buy one mobile phone and you are happy. Now you buy five mobiles in a year and you're not happy. There is nothing making people happy now."It's not just the Emiratis who are dissatisfied. The laborers building and maintaining the city live in crowded conditions, working long hours in often dangerous jobs for little money, the threat of deportation preventing them from organizing to improve their condition. There are of course many poor people in many countries across the world, and it is true that many laborers make better money in Dubai than they would at home. But what kind of "vision" of development ignores the suffering of so many of its residents? Before the 2009 market collapse Dubai had bank-loads of money, some of which could have been diverted from the latest vanity project to help those who make important contributions to the state and society. Where is the compassion? What kind of vision of the future is this?If Dubai means anything at all, it's a call to start questioning our assumptions. What's wrong with less stuff and a more measured pace of development? Won't compassion for the environment, an equitable division of benefits, and a meaningful personal stake in society and in one's own life make living richer than another hotel, shopping mall, or skyscraper? For a country that's actually trying to do something different, to break out of the present and into something possibly futuristic, look to Bhutan, a small developing country with few resources which measures progress in terms of GDH - Gross Domestic Happiness.#

I started reading this near the end of a trip to Dubai and I wish I had read it earlier. It is an excellent introduction to this city-state and will explain in advance many of the questions that will arise anyway in the course of your travels. For readers who do not plan to travel to Dubai, it provides a good historical and cultural introduction to an important part of the Arab world. Krane does not stint on his criticisms of the government or the royal family, but also acknowledges the progressive and visionary elements of the current leadership. I highly recommend this book if you are planning a trip to the UAE. If you weren't planning to go there, this book will certainly whet your curiosity.

When traveling to a new country for work for an extended period of time, I try to read a book or two that provides some historical and cultural context to the place. It's nice to get some grounding on the place I'm visiting, and I've found this contributes both to my enjoyment of the locale and also my understanding of the people I'm working and interacting with. For the first-timer to Dubai, I don't think you could do much better than this book. The author is clearly fascinated by his subject matter, and brings passion and deep expertise to his writing. Mr. Krane presents Dubai through the eyes of a reporter, providing first-hand interviews from the men and women behind the scenes in Dubai, and presenting several facets of the key aspects of the city. Rather than a puff piece or agenda-driven slash job, the author presents the positives and negatives of Dubai's breakneck development and allows the reader to form their own conclusions at the benefit of his research and commentary. While it's missing the details of Dubai's economic crash, it certainly gives one the grounding to make more sense of Dubai's chances for the future.Aside from a jab or two at former US President GW Bush, which seems a bit hackneyed and trite in 2012, the book was well-researched and unbiased, and managed the difficult task of remaining entertaining rather than reading like a graduate thesis. I was unable to set the book down, and found my evening walks through Dubai complemented by each chapter I read. The only flaw I found was several photographs are mentioned in the acknowledgments, but none appear in the Kindle edition of the book, although they would not have been missed unless one read the end notes. For the casual observer, it's tempting to dismiss Dubai as the "Las Vegas of the Middle East," but Mr. Krane provides a deeper, more nuanced view of this fascinating place. Beneath the shiny buildings there are subtle undercurrents, and I found each chapter of this book provided a welcome exposure to yet another facet of the City of Gold.

Good, but aging (originally published in 1979), intro look at the Eastern Front from the German perspective. For someone wanting to learn about this conflict, this easily read book is probably worth having in their initial collection. As can be seen in the table of contents, it is not a chronological (or comprehensive) account of the war, but focuses on various topics of interest such as German views of the Red Army, assault gun operations, combat in winter, etc.

Looks like a plain forgettable book about ww2, but this is one of the best WW2 books ive ever read. Has great details and actual stories of combat.

I usually listen to books via Audible. Not too many actual books can hold my interest to the end, but this one did. Recommended.

I was amazed by descriptions of the terrain, weather, and overall conditions in which the two sides contended. Also, I also was surprised by the relatively dated tactics and equipment employed; the German army relied heavily on horses for transport, and both sides still engaged in horse and rider cavalry battles.

My only complaint is there should have been more personal accounts of the war. Apart from that I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Shows how terrible war is on either side of the fence.Senseless death in huge numbers to satisfy the lusts of the leaders.

Very thorough, detailed and accurate as usual.

Very readable with a down to earth format. Must read for students of this era.Individual stories were compelling. Glad I wasn’t there.

Once WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT YOURSELF? WHAT ARE YOUR stories? The ones you tell yourself, and the ones told by others. All of us begin somewhere. Though I suppose the truth is that we begin more than once; we begin many times. Over and over, we start our own tales, compose our own stories, whether our lives are short or long. Until at last all our beginnings come down to just one end, and the tale of who we are is done. This is the first story I ever heard about myself: that I came into this world before my time. And that my coming was so sudden, hot, and swift, it carried everything before it away, including my mother’s life. Full of confusion was the day of my birth, of portents, and of omens. Just at daybreak, a flock of white birds flew across the face of the sun. Its rising light stained their wings bloodred. This was an omen of life taking flight. At full noon, every single tree in every single orchard on my father’s estate burst into bloom at once, in spite of the fact that it was October. This was an omen of life’s arrival. At dusk, a great storm arose, catching everyone by surprise. My mother was in her garden, the one she planted and tended with her own two hands, when two claps of thunder, one from the east and the other from the west, met above her head in a great collision of sound. The earth shook beneath her feet. Crying out, my mother tumbled to the ground. What this portended nobody ever did decide, because it was at precisely this moment that I declared my intention to be born. Fortunately for my mother, she was not alone. The healer, Old Mathilde, was with her, as she often was when my father was away from home. Just how old Old Mathilde is, no one really knows. But no matter what her years, she was strong and hale enough to lift my mother up and carry her indoors—through the gate in the garden wall and around the side of the house, up the steps to the front door, and across the great hall. Then, finally, up a wide set of stairs from the great hall to the second floor. By the time Old Mathilde reached my mother’s chamber, it was storming in earnest, and she, herself, was breathing hard. The wind wailed like a banshee. Hailstones clattered against the roof with a sound like military drums. Old Mathilde set my mother gently on the bed, paused to catch her breath. Then she summoned Susanne, who worked in the kitchen, instructing her to bring hot water and soft towels. But when Mathilde went to stir up the coals, the wind got there first, screaming down the chimney, putting out the fire. Not content to do this in my mother’s room alone, the wind then extinguished every other fire throughout my father’s great stone house by the sea, until not so much as a candle remained lit. All the servants quaked in fear. The women buried their heads beneath their aprons, and the men behind their arms, for nobody could remember such an event ever occurring before. And so it was first in shadow, and then in darkness, that Old Mathilde and my mother strove to bring me into the world. Just before midnight, I arrived. At my coming, the storm ceased as suddenly as it had begun. A great silence filled the great stone house. Into it came the loud voice of the sea, and then my mother’s quiet voice, asking Old Mathilde to place me in her waiting arms. She asked this just as the clocks throughout the house began to strike midnight: the only hour in all the world that begins in one day and ends in another. This was the moment I knew my mother’s touch for the first and only time. And this is the story Old Mathilde has told me each and every time I asked her to: that, with my green eyes, I gazed up, and with her green eyes, my mother gazed back down. She ran one hand across my head, her fingers lingering on my bright red hair, for this, too, was the exact same shade as her own. Then she bent her head and pressed a kiss upon my brow. I carry the mark of it to this day, the faintest smudge of rose just at my hairline. “Mathilde,” my mother said then, and with the sounding of her own name, Old Mathilde understood what my coming into the world before my time would cost. For she recognized the sound my mother’s voice made—a sound that was both less and more than it had ever been before. No one is better at understanding the world than Old Mathilde, at being able to see things for what they truly are. This is what makes her such a good healer, I suppose. For how can you mend a thing, any thing, if you cannot truly see what is wrong? Some things, of course, cannot be healed, no matter how much you want them to be, no matter how hard you try. Old Mathilde was not a magician. She was simply very good at helping wishes come true. “Will you hear a wish?” my mother asked now. Just for an instant, Old Mathilde closed her eyes, as if summoning the strength to hear what would come. For my mother was asking to bestow the most powerful wish there is, one that is a birth and death wish, all at the same time. Then Old Mathilde opened her eyes and gave the only answer she could, also the one that was in her heart. “I will grant whatever you wish that lies within my power, Constanze, my child.” Constanze d’Este. That was my mother’s name. “I wish for you to be my daughter’s godmother,” Constanze d’Este replied. “Love her for me, care for her when I am gone, for I fear her father will do neither one. When he looks at her, he will not find joy in the color of her hair and eyes. He will not see the way that I live on. Instead, he will see only that she came too soon, and that her arrival carried me out of this life. “Besides, he is a man and a great lord. He wished for his first child to be a boy.” “What you wish for is easily granted,” Old Mathilde said. “For I have loved this child with all my heart since she was no more than a dream in yours. As for Etienne . . .” Etienne de Brabant. That is my father’s name. “I suppose a man may be a great lord and a great fool all at once. What shall I call her, while I’m loving her so much?” At this point in the story, Old Mathilde always does the same thing: She smiles. Not because the circumstances she’s relating are particularly happy, but because smiling is what my mother did. “Call her by whatever name you think best,” she replied. “For you will raise her, not I.” “Then I will give her your name,” Old Mathilde said. “For she should have more of her mother than just the color of her hair and eyes, and a memory she is too young to know how to hold.” And so I was named Constanze, after my mother. And no sooner had this been decided, than my mother died. Old Mathilde sat beside the bed, her eyes seeing the two of us together even in the dark, until my mother’s lips turned pale, her arms grew cold, and the clouds outside the window parted to reveal a spangle of high night stars. Not once in all that time, so Old Mathilde has always claimed, did I so much as stir or cry. When the slim and curving sickle of the moon had reached the top of the window, then begun its slide back down the sky, Old Mathilde got up from her chair and lifted me gently from my mother’s arms. She carried me downstairs to the great open fireplace in the kitchen. Holding me in the crook of one arm, she took the longest poker she could find and stirred up the coals. Not even such a storm as had descended upon us that night could altogether put out the kitchen fire—the fire that is the heart of any house. Once the coals were glowing as they should, Old Mathilde wrapped me in a towel of red flannel, took the largest of our soup kettles down from its peg, tucked me inside it, and nestled the pot among the embers so that I might grow warm once more. As she did, I began to cry for the very first time. And at this, as if the sound of my voice startled them back into existence, all the other fires throughout the great stone house came back to life. Flurries of sparks shot straight up every chimney, scattering into the air like red-hot fireflies. In this way, I earned a second name that night, the one that people use and remember, in spite of the fact that the name Constanze is a perfectly fine one. Nobody has ever called me that, not even Old Mathilde. Instead, she calls me by the name I was given for the coals that kept me warm, for the fires I brought back to life with the sound of my own voice. Child of cinders. Cendrillon.

In general The Once Upon A Time series has quite a few hits but I'd be lying if I said it had no misses.(Midnight Pearls comes to mind) here collected in a single volume are 3 of the best in the series. Here You'll find Before Midnight as one might assume a retelling of Cinderella we also have Golden a whimsical yet heartfelt retelling of Rapunzel and Wild Orchid a retelling of Mulan. Before Midnight is definitely influenced by Perrault's most commonly recognized version of the tale. Golden puts a new Spin on the tale because our heroine does not begin her tale as a woman of unparalleled beauty or even hair for that matter! Then there is my all time favorite of the series Wild orchid. In my opinion it really brings Mulan to life giving us a picture of her girlhood and the sort of courage it must have taken to help save a nation. I definitely recommend it especially for fans of Cameron Dokey.

Love these retellings of Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Mulan! Some of my favorites by Cameron Dokey.

These are creative and fun twists on traditional fairy tales. Hard to put them down once you start!

My 13 year old love this book

I appreciate that Cameron Dokey's series puts a new spin on these classic characters. I'm a fan of many authors who retell fairy tales (like Robin McKinley and Juliette Marillier) and Dokey is up there with them now.

These are wonderful retellings of traditional tales with unexpected turns of plot. I really enjoyed reading them.

Fun light read

I loved all three books that were in this book. Each retelling had it's own unique twist n the original fairy tale that I wasn't at all bored with the story. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting spin on a classic fairy tale.
